This is a map of the universe.<\/p>\n

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI)<\/a> at Kitt Peak National Observatory<\/a>, Arizona<\/a>, has finished its five-year survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It observed more than 47 million galaxies and quasars and created a 3D map<\/a> centered on the Earth.<\/p>\n

Today’s featured image<\/a> shows a thin slice of these data: the black gaps indicate where our Galaxy<\/a> obscures distant objects.<\/p>\n

The feathery web in the inset shows the large scale structure<\/a> of the universe.<\/p>\n

Light of the most distant galaxies shown here travelled for 11 billion years<\/a> to reach the Earth.<\/p>\n

Galaxies cluster throughout cosmic history<\/a> under the competing influences of gravity<\/a> and dark energy<\/a>, responsible for the accelerated expansion<\/a> of the universe.<\/p>\n

Analysis of early DESI results<\/a> hinted at the possibility that dark energy, described as a cosmological constant by Albert Einstein<\/a>, may not be constant after all.<\/p>\n

But we still have to wait for the analysis of the now complete dataset.<\/p>\n

The nature of dark energy is the biggest mystery<\/a> of cosmology.<\/p>\n
