Digital drivers’ licences displayed within a government smart phone app are set to be made available to West Australians by the end of next year.<\/p>\n

The plan was unveiled in Perth on Thursday, with a trial to begin in mid-2027 and the system operational by year’s end.<\/p>\n

$28 million has been allocated toward rolling out the program, with the licence and other digital identification to be contained in the ServiceWA app.<\/p>\n

“We will build our digital driver’s licence to the best national and international standards to make sure they’re safe and secure and available for Western Australians to use,” Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson said.<\/p>\n

Having a digital licence would not be compulsory, said assistant Transport Minister Jessica Stojkovski, with physical licences remaining available for the “foreseeable future”.<\/p>\n

“You can choose to have a digital driver’s licence if that suits your circumstances and lifestyle, but equally if you like having a physical driver’s licence, you can do that as well,” she said.<\/p>\n

New system ‘safer’<\/p>\n

Ms Stojkovski said the WA Office of Digital Government would work with licensed venues to determine how the new licences would be used for age verification purposes.<\/p>\n

She said the new licences would be “safer” than a physical card when entering venues.<\/p>\n

“At the moment, if you go to a club and you present your licence, they capture that information \u2014 we’re not sure how they store it, what they do with it,” she said.<\/p>\n

“In this case, when they do [ask for] proof of age \u2026 they will just be told that you are of age, they won’t get the rest of your data \u2026 so it’s actually a safer system.”<\/p>\n

When asked about why WA was only now implementing digital licences when other states had already done so, Ms Stojkovski said security concerns had been paramount.<\/p>\n

“A really important part of the work that’s been done to progress the digital driver’s licence in Western Australia is managing the security aspect that comes with holding sensitive information in a digital format,” she said.<\/p>\n
