The Queensland Police Service will test every Glock handgun issued to officers, over fears they could inadvertently fire multiple shots.<\/p>\n

The service says “further testing is being progressed to provide additional confidence”.<\/p>\n

“Testing is being conducted across all regions, commands and divisions in the interests of officer and community safety,” it said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Police said there have been no operational issues with the service-issued weapons.<\/p>\n

Untested handguns will remain in use<\/p>\n

Deputy Commissioner Christopher Stream said the service had begun coordinated testing of all Glock handguns after an issue was identified that could cause multiple rounds to be discharged when a single shot was fired.<\/p>\n

“All operational and non-operational officers that possess a Glock handgun will have those weapons tested,” Deputy Commander Stream said.<\/p>\n

“Firearms that meet the testing requirements will be returned to service.<\/p>\n

“Any firearms that do not meet the required standards and checks will be held and removed from operational use.”<\/p>\n

Three firearms have so far been identified with the issue, according to the QPS.<\/p>\n

Deputy Commander Stream said there had not been any operational incidents identified in connection with the weapons.<\/p>\n

The QPS is working with suppliers to rectify the issue.<\/p>\n

The service possesses over 15,000 Glock handguns which have been used in the service since 1999.<\/p>\n

Deputy Commander Stream said firearms that had not yet been tested would remain in use until they are tested.<\/p>\n

“If an officer had to use a weapon currently and discharged that weapon, there is an unknown risk in terms of the untested weapon discharging multiple rounds.”<\/p>\n

But he said there was no broader threat to community safety or to officers using the weapons.<\/p>\n

The timeframe for completing the testing is not yet known.<\/p>\n

Officers have been notified and will be provided with additional operational guidance, including instructional videos.<\/p>\n

Union concerned for officers and public<\/p>\n

Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior said the union would work with the service to identify the extent of the issue.<\/p>\n

“It would seem the guns in operation right now are safe to use on our frontline, but further testing is going to be required,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Prior said the Glock handguns in question were procured “between 1999 and 2003” and suggested the service should have looked to replace them ten years ago.<\/p>\n

He said it was vital that officers had the “very best equipment” when in the field.<\/p>\n

“The last thing I want to see is our police that are putting a gun on every day, a tool that they may very well need to save their life, the life of their colleague, or the life of a member of the community, and it does not work correctly.<\/p>\n

“Our work environment in Queensland has never been as dangerous as it is right now. We’re seeing the reliance on the use of tasers and firearms increasing.”<\/p>\n

Mr Prior said he will call on the state government to replace the entire fleet of Glock handguns if the problem is deemed large enough.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for New South Wales Police Force said the service commenced replacing their Glock models in 2023, a process they expect to be completed by the end of May.<\/p>\n

When contacted for comment, a spokesperson for Australian Capital Territory Policing said they were not aware of any issues with handguns in their service.<\/p>\n

Tasmania Police said their stock of Glocks was upgraded to the newest model in the past three years and they were not aware of any issues.<\/p>\n

South Australia Police and Victoria Police said their services do not use Glock handguns.<\/p>\n
