<\/p>\nDay Two at the Mutua Madrid Open was another pretty standard first-round affair for a two-week Masters 1000; mostly predictable results with a handful of upsets and some close calls.<\/p>\n
The clearest low point was Grigor Dimitrov\u2019s straight-sets defeat to 21-year-old Paraguayan qualifier Adolfo Daniel Vallejo (6-4 6-4).<\/p>\n
It was the biggest upset of the day and while a big win for Vallejo, it continues a rough patch for the Bulgarian.<\/p>\n
Stefanos Tsitsipas also had to dig deep to survive against lucky loser Patrick Kypson, while a few qualifiers and home players picked up solid wins.<\/p>\n

The biggest upset of the day. The 21-year-old Paraguayan qualifier stunned the former World No. 3 on his Masters 1000 main-draw debut.<\/p>\n
Vallejo becomes just the second Paraguayan ever to win a match at this level (after Ramon Delgado). He called it \u201clike a movie\u201d afterwards and jumped to No. 84 in the live rankings. Next: Learner Tien.<\/p>\n
Dimitrov is in a bit of a crisis now as his ranking slips to outside the Top 150, and he\u2019s only won 2 of his 10 matches this season.<\/p>\n

The Greek survived a massive scare. Down a set and two points from defeat in the second-set tiebreak, Tsitsipas rallied to win two tight tiebreaks and snap a three-match losing streak.<\/p>\n
He\u2019ll face eighth seed Alexander Bublik next, which I don\u2019t see him winning, as he\u2019s still not playing well.<\/p>\n
Camilo Ugo Carabelli def. Ga\u00ebl Monfils (WC) 6-3 6-4<\/p>\n
Straight-sets win for the Argentine over the veteran wildcard. Monfils looked flat on clay, while Ugo Carabelli was clinical. Probably a waste of a wildcard as Monfils has never done well in Madrid.<\/p>\n
Vilius Gaubas (Q) def. Sebasti\u00e1n B\u00e1ez 7-5 6-1<\/p>\n
Impressive upset by the young Lithuanian qualifier. He dominated the second set after a tight opener against the consistent clay-courter B\u00e1ez. I am not sure why but European clay isn\u2019t a happy hunting ground for the Argentine.<\/p>\n
Pablo Carre\u00f1o Busta (WC) def. M\u00e1rton Fucsovics 4-6 7-6(5) 6-2<\/p>\n
The Spanish veteran earned his first Madrid win in 10 years after rallying from a set down in front of the home crowd.<\/p>\n
Daniel M\u00e9rida def. Marco Trungelliti 6-4 1-6 7-6(6)<\/p>\n
This was easily the most dramatic and spicy match of the day. Funnily enough, it was a rematch from qualifying just two days earlier (where M\u00e9rida had already beaten Trungelliti).<\/p>\n
The Argentine came in as a lucky loser and pushed the local Spanish qualifier all the way, serving\u00a0for the match at 6-5 in the third. He held two match points at 40-15, but M\u00e9rida saved both to force a tiebreak.<\/p>\n
The tiebreak was chaotic: Trungelliti saved four match points before finally falling on the fifth. The crowd was heavily involved throughout, booing and getting on the Argentine\u2019s back, which led to heated moments. Trungelliti even stopped play to complain to the supervisor about the atmosphere.<\/p>\n
