OpenAI recently shuttered its video-generating app Sora, in part because it was gobbling up the company\u2019s computational supplies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf6tmh00053b6qalj9f0zu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The data centers that make up the backbone of AI technology need loads of energy \u2013 both to keep their servers humming and to prevent overheating. But the United States\u2019 electrical grid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/18\/climate\/us-electric-grid-extreme-weather-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">isn\u2019t exactly up to the task<\/a> of powering the 21st century economy. It\u2019s old and janky \u2013 a loosely connected collection of three grids: East, West and Texas. Experts have long warned that it is outdated and ill-equipped to respond to everything from severe weather to AI\u2019s insatiable new power demand.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf6tmh00063b6q7r77lux7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBasically, we have run out of headroom, largely speaking, in the US,\u201d said Ben Hertz-Shargel, an expert on electrification and data centers at energy research firm Wood Mackenzie. \u201cThere is a land grab happening, where companies believe that access to more capacity for compute will be necessary to win the future battle over AI services.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf6tmh00073b6q6uj9crm7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and Meta are ramping up investments in data centers and electricity generation to power new AI models and services, betting that more energy will be needed to keep up with future AI-drive products. OpenAI last year warned the White House of an \u201celectron gap\u201d that puts US leadership in AI at risk, <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/global-affairs\/seizing-the-ai-opportunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">writing that<\/a> \u201celectrons are the new oil.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2025-09-18t191343z-943700026-rc2gugarujap-rtrmadp-3-usa-ai-microsoft-data.JPG\" alt=\"Cables sit inside the Microsoft data center campus\u2019 Data Hall.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf6tmh00083b6qccg0cq7e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, Tesla and SpaceX, said at the World Economic Forum in January that he expects that more chips will be produced than can be turned on because of power constraints.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf6tmh00093b6qv0wkuiwb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A Google spokesperson told CNN that the current pace of energy growth is not yet meeting the potential of AI, and that the US needs to go all-in on energy development to keep pace.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf6tmh000a3b6qz4rc56fj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Solutions to the power problem exist: increasing renewable energy and battery development, scaling up traditional energy sources like gas and nuclear power, and expanding the current energy grid\u2019s capacity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf6tmh000b3b6qqiuyct5l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But they all face roadblocks, both politically and practically.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf9f2c000g3b6qlj0blwvg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The industry is lobbying at both the state and federal level for policies that accelerate permitting and maintain incentives for private sector investment, and the Trump administration recommended relaxing federal rules and expediting construction permits in an AI action plan last year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf9qpf000i3b6qnqgtfqz7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But delivering more electric infrastructure is more easily said than done. The most immediate solution is getting more power out of the current electrical grid, experts said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf9qpf000j3b6qn4f27vr7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/28\/climate\/energy-grid-modernization-biden\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Biden<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-department-announces-19b-investment-critical-grid-infrastructure-reduce-electricity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trump administrations<\/a> threw federal dollars at ideas to modernize and expand the grid, including \u201cre-conductoring,\u201d which replaces existing transmission lines with ones that have greater capacity, allowing more electrical current to travel through them. It\u2019s faster than building a new transmission line entirely, which could take seven to ten years to complete.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-2161943809.jpg\" alt=\"Large electrical transmission lines are routed to the newly completed Meta's Facebook data center in Eagle Mountain, Utah.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf9qpf000k3b6qvmx3uu4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Data center companies are looking for spare power capacity at every electrical utility they can find, \u201cincluding very non-traditional utilities and cooperatives whose doors have never been knocked on before,\u201d Hertz-Shargel said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf9qpf000l3b6qrhpwy0qp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One answer could be renewable energy sources like wind and solar, which are often much cheaper and faster to build than the large turbines that are the backbone of the generators in gas-fired power plants. The manufacturers who build these turbines have their order books filled; current wait times for a new turbine are over five years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf9qpf000m3b6qyrv3jmp4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But renewables have faced a one-two punch lately, with longer permitting times from the Trump administration combined with Republicans in Congress ending tax credits that would have made it cheaper to build them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoaf9qpf000n3b6q5qlma1o4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These changes \u201cdefinitely killed perfectly good wind and solar projects that would have reduced energy prices,\u201d said Andrew Levitt, a consultant focused on wholesale electricity at research firm Brattle. However, Levitt said he expected to see growth in renewable projects going forward because the sheer demand for electricity is so great.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Looking to batteries and fusion<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoafa8ob000r3b6qgl0lzkcb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AI companies are pouring money into futuristic technology like fusion power and fueling the big battery industry in an effort to satisfy their hunger for electricity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoafakdm000t3b6q3quy37rm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is backing a $5.4 billion nuclear fusion start-up called Helion Energy, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a3aadd86-7ac4-4b6b-bce0-edd69fb1d7a1?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">claims it will supply<\/a> Microsoft with electricity by 2028. However, there\u2019s still a big question on whether companies and governments can crack the thorniest problem: getting more energy out than you put into it and building the right machine to sustain that power.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoafakdm000v3b6q8smrlgl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AI companies are also seeking ways to make their own technology more efficient. Hertz-Shargel said batteries are becoming a necessity for data centers: The way these facilities consume power can cause issues with electrical currents, which damages gas turbines and electric infrastructure. In these cases, batteries can act as a buffer between the data center and the grid to protect its infrastructure.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoafakdm000x3b6qleccu0ly@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hertz-Shargel said data center demand will be a \u201chuge\u201d boon for the battery storage industry, especially for companies working on future battery technology. The big spending on data centers provides a reliable revenue stream that the \u201clong duration storage industry really needs,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoafakdn000y3b6qjcnamcxt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite the hurdles to getting more power, others are more optimistic.
