Liberal MP and SAS veteran Andrew Hastie says Australia’s alliance with the US has in some ways weakened our country, and he called for a buildup of Australian hard power and industrial capability.

Hastie gave the 2026 Anzac Oration at the Robert Menzies Institute, in which he reflected on the history, present, and future of Australia’s alliance with the US.

“This has been driven by an instinct to make our real estate more valuable to the United States, and therefore secure their support in an armed attack against our interests or territory,” he said.

“The cost or trade-off of this approach has been the loss of sovereign capability and increased dependency on the United States.”

He said Australia even risked becoming a burden to the US, particularly in the transactional age of Trump, when the US cannot be relied on except to guarantee its own security.

“To put it bluntly, if ANZUS is going to continue for another seventy-five years, we need to invest in our industrial base and our defence force,” he said.

“For the last 30 years, we have neglected our commitment in Article II to develop our means of ‘continuous and effective self-help’ so that we can defend ourselves and our partners.

“We must grow our industrial might and hard power.”

This involved constructing AI data centres, drilling for oil in Australia, and giving the defence force “teeth”.

“I believe we need the visceral fighting animal, and the inspiring spirit of ANZUS, if it is to have a future,” Hastie said.

By Adam Vidler23 Apr 2026 23:31 Liberal MP and SAS veteran Andrew Hastie says Australia’s alliance with the…

[2
43,44,41,39,42,40
post-626752","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories
["GET
