Adolfo Daniel Vallejo<\/a>, former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas<\/a> and Pablo Carreno Busta<\/a> were winners on Day 2 of this year\u2019s Mutua Madrid Open<\/a> on Thursday, while Gael Monfils<\/a> bid farewell to the Spanish crowd following his final appearance at the event.<\/p>\n

Paraguayan qualifier Adolfo Daniel Vallejo<\/a> earned victory on his ATP Masters 1000 debut on Thursday when he cruised past former World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov<\/a> 6-4, 6-4 to reach the second round. With the victory, the 21-year-old became the second Paraguayan to record a Masters 1000 win.<\/p>\n

Stefanos Tsitsipas<\/a>, the 2019 finalist, was made to work hard for his first-round victory. The 27-year-old overcame lucky loser Patrick Kypson<\/a> 3-6 6-7(6),7-6(4) to earn his first clay-court victory of the season. Tsitsipas will next face eighth seed Alexander Bublik<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Home hope Pablo Carreno Busta<\/a> thrilled Spanish fans on Thursday when he earned his first Madrid victory in a decade. The 34-year-old rallied past Marton Fucsovics<\/a> 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 and will face countryman Alejandro Davidovich Fokina<\/a> in the second round.<\/p>\n

Gael Monfils<\/a> competed for the final time in Madrid. Camilo Ugo Carabelli<\/a> defeated the Frenchman 6-3, 6-4. Monfils\u2019 best result at the Masters 1000 event came in 2008 and 2010 when he reached the quarter-finals. With the victory against the Frenchman, Ugo Carabelli earned his first win in Madrid.<\/p>\n

In other action, hometown hero Daniel Merida<\/a> saved two match points to defeat Marco Trungelliti<\/a> 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(6). The 21-year-old brought plenty of excitement to the court, including this thrilling return from out wide when he was down two match points in the third set.<\/p>\n

With the comeback victory, the Madrid native earned his first Masters 1000 win. <\/p>\n

In other action, Alexander Blockx<\/a> earned his first victory in Madrid on Thursday when he outlasted Cristian Garin<\/a> 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. The 21-year-old will face Brandon Nakashima<\/a> in the second round.<\/p>\n

Yannick Hanfmann<\/a> also earned a first-round win on Thursday when he defeated Marcos Giron<\/a>. The German, who this week is chasing his 100th tour-level win, produced many fun moments on court, including this sharp-angled strike in the early stages of the match.<\/p>\n
