Two new Wear OS smartwatches have been announced, but not only are both quite difficult to buy at the moment, but despite having different names, they\u2019re both almost exactly the same. <\/p>\n

Welcome to the world of the Oppo Watch X3<\/a> and the OnePlus Watch 4<\/a>, and the ever-increasing confusion between the two brands. <\/p>\n

There\u2019s a OnePlus Watch 4?<\/p>\n

OnePlus has sort-of, but not really launched the OnePlus Watch 4. The smartwatch has appeared on a dedicated page on its website, but it is not listed as a device you can buy in the US or the UK. There hasn’t been an official press release for the smartwatch yet either. <\/p>\n

The 47mm smartwatch has a titanium alloy case in either Midnight or Evergreen finishes, complete with a rubber strap. The 1.5-inch OLED screen has a 466 x 466 pixel resolution and is covered in sapphire crystal. <\/p>\n

Inside is the same Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 processor with 2GB of RAM which OnePlus used in the OnePlus Watch 3<\/a>. It has the same BES2800 co-processor too, which helps extend battery life by handling the always-on screen and some low-energy functions. <\/p>\n

OnePlus expects 16 days battery life in power-saving mode, and a more likely three to five days use when used normally. Perhaps most notable is the software upgrade to Google\u2019s Wear OS 6, making it one of the first smartwatches not made by Samsung with the latest version.<\/p>\n

What about the Oppo Watch X3?<\/p>\n

Joining the OnePlus Watch 4 is the Oppo Watch X3, which not only shares the same design, but also the same specification, right down to Wear OS 6 and a potential 16 days of battery life. <\/p>\n

The only major differences appear to be the Watch X3 will be available with an optional metal bracelet, and only in an Obsidian Black finish. Like the OnePlus Watch 4, it also hasn\u2019t changed much over its predecessor, the Oppo Watch X2.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s not listed as being available to buy in the UK yet (Oppo does not officially sell its products in the US), it is set to be released at some point and will cost \u00a3329, or around $443. This is \u00a310 more than the OnePlus Watch 3\u2019s launch price, and we’d expect the same price for the OnePlus Watch 4, should it ever be available to buy.<\/p>\n

What’s going on? Either the OnePlus Watch 4 is a rebranded Oppo Watch X3, or vice versa, as it\u2019s clear we\u2019re looking at the same smartwatch just with different names. <\/p>\n

Oppo and OnePlus have shared research and development for a while now, and the two companies are tightly linked. Rumors continue to spread about OnePlus leaving key global markets<\/a>, and the relative official silence over the OnePlus Watch 4 won\u2019t help them dissipate. <\/p>\n

Are these the updates we wanted? <\/p>\n

The OnePlus Watch 3 was the pinnacle of OnePlus\u2019s smartwatch efforts, and remains a benchmark today for its long battery life, good design, and choice of case sizes<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The Oppo Watch X3\/OnePlus Watch 4 isn\u2019t the update many would have wanted to see, with only the software and switch to titanium from stainless steel notable on the spec sheet. <\/p>\n

What we\u2019ve got, after analysis, are two smartwatches which may not be viewed as a worthy upgrade, from a pair of companies likely in the midst of an internal battle for supremacy. <\/p>\n
