To which I have to wonder: What are we even doing here?<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e28d544f-243e-4118-b80e-bb86efe719f1-2\">The concept was mentioned\u2014not quite in those terms\u2014by Google Cloud gaming exec Jack Buser back at the Game Developers Conference in March.<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/schedule.gdconf.com\/session\/build-living-games-with-ai\/918248\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/schedule.gdconf.com\/session\/build-living-games-with-ai\/918248\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> His talk<\/a> broadly promoted generative AI adoption, hopping across everyday game dev problems AI is being used for: tagging assets, debugging, detecting cheaters. I don&#8217;t have an especially visceral reaction to those uses for AI, but my stomach churned at the mention of &#8220;hyperpersonalization.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Article continues below <\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>    <a id=\"elk-824cadd6-2d1b-40fe-9242-15cdb1191b9f\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>AI is great! Here&#8217;s how we&#8217;re going to use it against you<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-d4aa6abb-72d2-42fa-beb9-00fbf4e49ff9\">AI boosters have been kicking the &#8220;hyperpersonalization&#8221; term around for a few years now. Microsoft said in<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-cloud\/blog\/retail\/2024\/10\/28\/harnessing-ai-to-supercharge-personalized-marketing-at-scale\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-cloud\/blog\/retail\/2024\/10\/28\/harnessing-ai-to-supercharge-personalized-marketing-at-scale\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> a 2024 blog post<\/a> that the outcome of hyperpersonalized AI marketing should be that &#8220;customers&#8217; needs are anticipated before they even ask.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to games, Buser is excited by the idea of generative AI models that invisibly adjust a player&#8217;s experience so that marketing &#8220;feels like it&#8217;s part of the gameplay experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;AI is doing this so well now that it can predict churn before it even happens in extremely robust ways,&#8221; Buser said, &#8220;and it can adjust gameplay as well as offers that you put in front of your players in near real time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re building software that makes Minority Report-style predictions about the likelihood someone will stop playing your videogame so that you can then manipulate them into playing and spending more, I think you should go sit by a body of water, listen to the birds, and ask yourself what the hell you&#8217;re even doing anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.<\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s truly impossible to make money selling games without using machine learning to build psychological prisons\u2014like in that one <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-zAMDnozmlI\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-zAMDnozmlI\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Star Trek: TNG episode<\/a> where everyone got addicted to willing discs into tubes\u2014then there&#8217;s no games industry to save. There are just software companies competing to design the best digital nicotine.<\/p>\n<p>We might already describe parts of the industry that way\u2014loot boxes, daily quests, and other tricks all predate AI\u2014but certainly not all of it. Big and small developers are still making games that, whether or not they pay the bills, exist because their creators genuinely want to enrich our lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many people make games for money, but we make money for games,&#8221; one triple-A studio founder<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/action\/in-15-years-of-interviewing-aaa-game-developers-i-think-this-is-the-first-time-ones-straight-up-told-me-many-people-make-games-for-money-but-we-make-money-for-games\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/action\/in-15-years-of-interviewing-aaa-game-developers-i-think-this-is-the-first-time-ones-straight-up-told-me-many-people-make-games-for-money-but-we-make-money-for-games\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/action\/in-15-years-of-interviewing-aaa-game-developers-i-think-this-is-the-first-time-ones-straight-up-told-me-many-people-make-games-for-money-but-we-make-money-for-games\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> recently told us<\/a>. They tell us openly that their goal is to make more money while employing fewer people, and then <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/microsofts-head-of-ai-doesnt-understand-why-people-dont-like-ai-and-i-dont-understand-why-he-doesnt-understand-because-its-pretty-obvious\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/microsofts-head-of-ai-doesnt-understand-why-people-dont-like-ai-and-i-dont-understand-why-he-doesnt-understand-because-its-pretty-obvious\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/microsofts-head-of-ai-doesnt-understand-why-people-dont-like-ai-and-i-dont-understand-why-he-doesnt-understand-because-its-pretty-obvious\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">act surprised<\/a> when we <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/major-investor-is-shocked-and-sad-that-the-games-industry-is-demonizing-generative-ai\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/major-investor-is-shocked-and-sad-that-the-games-industry-is-demonizing-generative-ai\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/major-investor-is-shocked-and-sad-that-the-games-industry-is-demonizing-generative-ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">don&#8217;t applaud<\/a> them for it.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps one day they&#8217;ll be able to do away with the abstract idea of &#8216;making a good videogame&#8217; altogether, designing hits purely by using AI to respond to the dictates of the numbers.
