{"id":628265,"date":"2026-04-24T17:09:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T17:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/628265\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T17:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T17:09:08","slug":"silver-saturday-preview-scottish-rugby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/628265\/","title":{"rendered":"Silver Saturday preview &#8211; Scottish Rugby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                        <img width=\"2560\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/21359284-scaled.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/>                    <\/p>\n<p>Fans will be able to enjoy a day packed\u00a0full of\u00a0action with the Sarah Beaney Cup, Scottish Cup, Women\u2019s Plate final, Men\u2019s National League Cup final, Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s Shield finals, and the Men\u2019s National Bowl final all being contested\u00a0across Scottish Gas Murrayfield and Hive Stadium.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen\u00a0of the best\u00a0teams from around the country will compete for\u00a0silverware, and their coaches and captains have been excitingly\u00a0anticipating\u00a0their fixtures, as well as reflecting on their seasons so far.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s Bowl Final:\u202fKinloss Eagles RUFC v\u202fHawick Linden RFC, Hive\u202fStadium, 10am KO\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the first kick-offs of the day at Hive Stadium will see the Men\u2019s Bowl Final contested between\u202fKinloss Eagles RUFC and\u202fHawick Linden RFC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hawick Linden club captain\u00a0Aiden Fairbairn\u202flooks forward to the Borders team\u2019s first outing at Scottish Gas Murrayfield:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a great pleasure to have made it to the final and Hawick Linden\u2019s\u202ffirst Silver Saturday.\u202fWinning the National Bowl will top off what has been a great season already with winning the double.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a credit to all the lads this season having good numbers at training and for game days which has really made a difference.\u00a0Shout out to all the boys this season.\u201d\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Head Coach\u00a0Simon Spalding\u202frecognises the\u00a0hard work\u00a0done by everybody involved at the club to get them to the final, adding:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s brilliant that we have managed to reach the final.\u00a0Over the 100+ years of the Linden,\u202fit\u2019s\u202fthe one thing\u202fthat\u2019s\u202fnever been done.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be the first to get to this stage is brilliant for\u202fthe Club and shows the\u202fhard work\u202fbeing done\u202fby the committee, coaches and players heading the club in the direction it wants to be going.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kinloss, who\u00a0secured their spot with a 24-14 win over Madras\u00a0Rugby, despite being reduced to 12 men at one stage, are\u00a0relishing\u00a0the chance\u00a0to add cup success to their top-of-the-table\u00a0Arnold Clark Caledonia North Region League Division\u00a02 season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Head Coach\u00a0Dan Woodward\u00a0said: \u201cWe love this competition;\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0been here before and won in 2023 for the first time in our club\u2019s relatively\u00a0short history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, we\u2019re fortunate to have a great blend of players from that final who are still here and playing, including our now\u00a0co-captains Jim Illingworth and Lewis Green, who all season have epitomised what this competition means to us, but also a set of fresh faces who are hungry for the opportunity to play on Silver Saturday and contribute their own piece of club history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s taken a monumental club effort for us to get here again, just to get to the final is a celebration for every player who has pulled on a shirt this season and got us here, many of which are currently deployed worldwide, and I know will be following along closely.\u00a0From Kinloss to Fiji and everywhere in-between,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0got a fantastic community supporting us and I hope we can do them all proud.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s Shield Final:\u202fHillhead\u00a0Jordanhill\u00a0RFC v Broughton RFC, Scottish Gas Murrayfield, 10am KO\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hillhead\u00a0Jordanhill\u00a0RFC will compete on two fronts, as the Glasgow club\u2019s second XV take part in the\u00a0Women\u2019s Shield Final\u00a0against\u00a0Broughton RFC. The match will be streamed live on the Scottish Rugby YouTube\u00a0from\u00a010am.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hills\u2019\u00a0captain\u00a0Lou Brett\u00a0discusses their second XV\u2019s journey to the final: \u201cSince 2022 the\u00a0second XV\u00a0has continued to build and develop, HJRFC offers a welcoming and enjoyable environment for all types of players from those new to rugby right through to international players. The development of the\u00a0second XV\u00a0has successfully created opportunities and pathways for players whose goal has been to develop and represent the\u00a0first team\u00a0in the Premiership.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re\u202fincredibly proud to be the first club in Scotland to ever have two women\u2019s teams reach both the Cup and Shield Final on the same day.\u00a0A huge thank you goes to all the coaches whose hard work and dedication has made this all possible.\u202fFurthermore,\u202fthank you to the rugby committee and everyone at Hillhead Sports Club.\u202fWe\u2019re\u202fbuzzing to get out\u202fthere.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Broughton RFC\u00a0secured their spot in the final\u00a0defeating\u00a0Stewartry\u00a0RFC\u00a024-10 in the\u00a0semi-final, and captain\u00a0Alison MacDonald\u00a0reflects on an up-and-down season:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a tough start to the season with teams dropping out of the league leaving us with little game time to develop and attract\u00a0new players. We\u00a0ultimately finished\u00a0the league with no wins, however fortunately things have come together for the Shield run, with players returning from injury and an expansion of our squad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly 22 players are on the team sheet today but a further seven have helped us qualify for this final, via playing in earlier games and delivering\u00a0high standards\u00a0at training. The environment has been so positive from everyone throughout the campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve exceeded our expectations in the competition, but that\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0mean\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0not fully committed for the final. We have\u00a0a number of\u00a0players leaving or retiring this year and sending them off on a high has been a real motivator for the squad.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s Shield Final:\u202fCarrick RFC v Haddington RFC, Hive\u202fStadium, 12.45pm KO\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Men\u2019s Shield Final will be contested between\u00a0Carrick RFC\u00a0and\u00a0Haddington RFC, with the South Ayrshire side booking their spot through a comfortable 27 -16 win at home against Broughton RFC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their club captain,\u00a0John Fulton\u202fsaid:\u00a0\u201cHaving played in three finals previously, I know just how special this opportunity is. To be back at this stage again is something we\u202fdon\u2019t\u202ftake for granted.\u00a0I\u2019m\u202fincredibly proud of the boys and the effort\u202fthey\u2019ve\u202fput in to get here. We\u2019re\u202fa small club from Maybole, so to reach a national final is a fantastic achievement and\u202fa great opportunity\u202ffor us to show what we can do on a bigger stage.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving the backing of our local community means a huge amount to us as well. Their support has been there all season, and to have them behind us for this occasion makes it even more special.\u202fWe know\u202fit\u2019s\u202fnot going to be easy, but\u202fI\u2019ve\u202fgot full belief in this group to put together\u202fa strong performance\u202fand do ourselves justice on the day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their rivals on the day, Haddington RFC will be looking to cap an impressive league campaign with a cup final victory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Freddie Cunningham, Haddington captain said: \u201cIt\u2019s an incredible honour, for both myself and the entire team to reach the Shield Final. This moment reflects the hard work, commitment, and belief that has driven our club all season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 1st XV haven\u2019t done this alone. The unwavering support from our club community, along with the work of an outstanding Committee and coaching staff, our brilliant 2nd XV, that have all been the foundation of everything we\u2019ve achieved this season. To now have the opportunity to win the Shield final with such a young, determined squad would mean everything. It\u2019s the chance to reward the journey we\u2019ve been on together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s National League Cup Final:\u202fGHK RFC v Highland RFC, Scottish Gas Murrayfield, 12.45pm KO\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GHK RFC will contest the Men\u2019s National League Cup following an impressive route to the final which saw them dispatch Cartha 44 \u2013 26 in the semi-final. <\/p>\n<p>Now their captain,\u00a0Calum Busby, looks to finish the job, saying: \u201cLooking ahead to the final,\u202fit\u2019s\u202fa game\u202fwe\u2019re\u202fincredibly excited about. It will be many of the boys\u2019\u00a0\u2013\u00a0including myself\u00a0\u2013\u00a0first time playing at\u00a0Scottish Gas\u00a0Murrayfield.\u00a0Winning the cup would mean so much to this group.\u202fWe\u2019ve\u202fworked\u202freally hard\u202fthis year and have put ourselves in a much better place than in recent seasons, so lifting the cup would be the icing on the cake.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of the boys,\u202fI\u2019d\u202fjust like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has travelled to watch us, and to those who have supported us throughout the season. We really appreciate all the love and support.\u202f\u00a0A big thank you also goes to everyone who works so hard behind the scenes, including our dedicated committee, coaching\u202fteam\u202fand physios. Without you all, we\u202fwouldn\u2019t\u202fbe able to have special days like today.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll\u00a0now face Highland RFC on the big day. The two teams have faced off twice already this season, winning one game each, so\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0evenly matched going\u00a0into\u00a0this third and final fixture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Highland\u2019s captain,\u00a0Scott Fraser said: \u201cThe boys are absolutely delighted to have made it to Silver Saturday. None of the squad have played there at senior level for the club so we\u2019ll make the most of the occasion, but ultimately, we\u2019re desperate to become the first ever Highland team to win at Scottish Gas Murrayfield.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their Head Coach,\u00a0Davie Carson, hopes they can take the National League Cup back on the team bus with them, adding: \u201cSince the win in the semi there\u2019s been a lot of excitement around the club. What a fantastic way to round off a successful season with a game at Scottish Gas Murrayfield. The whole club is looking forward to the game and hopefully a trip up the A9 with the trophy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s Plate Final: Lenzie RFC v\u00a0Hillfoots\u00a0RFC, Hive Stadium, 3.30pm KO\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lenzie RFC will play\u00a0Hillfoots\u00a0RFC in the Women\u2019s Plate Final. Lenzie secured their spot after\u00a0narrowly\u00a0defeating Annan RFC 8-7 in the semis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hillfoots\u00a0were the last team to lock in their spot,\u00a0beating\u00a0Hamilton Rugby Club 39-31\u00a0last weekend. Their captain,\u00a0Rowan Fair\u00a0recognises the role their dedicated fans\u00a0have played in their journey so far, saying: \u201cI\u2019m unbelievably proud of this group of amazing women and everything we\u2019ve achieved to get here, an unbeaten Plate run, a top three league finish and it\u2019s only our second competitive season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pressure and nerves that come with a final are a privilege, you\u00a0have to\u00a0earn the right to feel them, and we have earned that. This is a huge day not just for us, but for women\u2019s rugby, and\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0ready to embrace it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA huge thank you to our supporters for coming to support us in this match, including our players who can\u2019t be on the pitch with us \u2013 they\u2019ve all been a massive part of getting us to this stage and we wouldn\u2019t be here without them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Lenzie RFC are also celebrating the success of their Women\u2019s team as their side aim to take the Plate back to the West, looking ahead to their final, club captain Laura Manson\u00a0mentions that: \u201cBeing part of Silver Saturday for the National Plate Final is a huge moment for us in just our second year as a squad.\u00a0We\u2019ve grown massively, now with nearly 40 players involved and building towards a second team, which we\u2019re incredibly proud of.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a strong league season, the chance to run out at the Hive Stadium is a real honour and a brilliant way to showcase how far we\u2019ve come as a club.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Head Coach,\u00a0Steven McLoughlin\u00a0aims to make amends for their disappointing defeat in last season\u2019s cup campaign: \u201cThis group has shown real growth and resilience, especially after the disappointment of losing last year\u2019s semi-final.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn just our second year in the competition, reaching the final is a great achievement and a credit to the players\u2019 commitment and belief.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0excited to take that experience into this weekend and do everyone at Lenzie RFC proud.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scottish Cup Final:\u202fCurrie Chieftains v Ayr RFC, Scottish Gas Murrayfield, 3.30pm KO\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s Scottish Cup Final, shown live on BBC ALBA and BBC ALBA YouTube, Currie Chieftains will meet Ayr RFC in the main bowl at Scottish Gas Murrayfield.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ayr RFC will be looking to continue their form into the final following a series of dominant displays, seeing off last year\u2019s champions GHA RFC convincingly in the semi-final and defeating Currie 41-27 in the Arnold Clark Men\u2019s Premiership final.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their Head Coach,\u00a0Grant Anderson\u00a0suggests this weekend could be a closer contest: \u201cEveryone is looking forward to Saturday and there has been a real buzz of excitement at training.\u00a0This group of men have a unique opportunity to do something that hasn\u2019t been done before. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are fully focused on delivering for each other, for Blair (Macpherson) and ultimately, for our supporters who have followed us all over the country, week after week. Currie are a dangerous team who will be desperate to stop us \u2013 all of that rolled into 80 minutes should make for a great game.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the loss to the men in pink and black in the Arnold Clark Men\u2019s Premiership final last month, Currie will be looking to come away from Scottish Gas Murrayfield with the biggest cup prize in hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Head Coach\u00a0Mark Cairns\u00a0added:\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m really proud of the players for reaching both the Premiership and Cup finals. The opportunity to play at Murrayfield is special and one of the reasons the Scottish Cup is such a great competition. I was fortunate to play there in a final 20 years ago, and although we didn\u2019t get the result, it\u2019s a day I\u2019ll never forget.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re up against the best team in the country and deserved favourites, and we have a huge amount of respect for Ayr, but we also back ourselves to get the result. We pushed them in the Premiership Final and learned a lot from that game and our previous encounters. We know we\u2019ll need to be better across the full 80 minutes, but there\u2019s a strong belief within the group. There will only be one Currie team to win the Cup for the first time, and I believe this group has what it takes to do that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Beaney Cup Final:\u202fWatsonian FC v Hillhead\u202fJordanhill\u202fRFC,\u202fScottish Gas Murrayfield,\u202f6.15pm KO\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Silver Saturday will\u00a0wrap\u00a0up with the\u00a0top\u00a0event\u00a0in the Women\u2019s game,\u00a0as Watsonian FC and Hillhead\u00a0Jordanhill\u00a0RFC compete for the Sarah Beaney Cup\u00a0in a\u00a0repeat of last year\u2019s final.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Watsonian Women will feature in their fifth consecutive Sarah Beaney Cup, and captain\u00a0Rachel Law\u00a0wants to leave it all out there on the Scottish Gas Murrayfield turf: \u201cWe have shown the class and depth we have as a squad over the course of the past season and we are really excited to showcase it again on the main pitch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know how good Hillhead\u00a0have been all year, so it will be a tough up-front battle with\u00a0very small\u00a0margins.\u00a0Hopefully\u00a0we can put on a performance to be proud of.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Head Coach,\u00a0Bruce Millar\u00a0is happy with their preparations for the big game, adding:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0exciting to be back at\u00a0Scottish Gas\u00a0Murrayfield for another Sarah Beaney Cup final.\u00a0I\u2019ve been really proud of the bond this squad has created and the way they bounced back from the disappointment of the league final. They deserve to achieve something special together, and we\u2019ve prepared well to put in a performance that reflects everything we\u2019ve built this season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHills are a side we have enormous respect for. With just a single point separating the teams across two meetings this season, we know\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0have to be at our\u00a0very best.\u00a0Recent finals between the sides have been a great advert for the women\u2019s game, with some fantastic rugby played by both sides, and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0confident this one will be no\u00a0different.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hillhead\u00a0Jordanhill\u00a0RFC fell short by just one point following last year\u2019s epic cup final and will be looking to get over the line this time around. Their captain,\u00a0Debbie Lee\u00a0expects another close fought battle: \u201cWe are so excited to be heading back to another Silver Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the League, we were disappointed to be in the bottom four after the split but, on reflection, it gave us an opportunity to really work on our depth and getting people comfortable in\u202fdifferent positions, which has been\u202fvery beneficial\u202ffor us as a whole squad.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are no stranger to a cup final, and the squad we have\u202fat the moment\u202fis really clicking.
