CINCINNATI, Ohio \u2013 The Cleveland State women’s tennis team opened play at the Horizon League Championship Friday, picking up a 4-2 victory over IU Indy in the opening round. With the win, the Vikings will now face top-seeded Oakland in Saturday’s semifinals.<\/p>\n
Saturday’s semifinal appearance will be the 15th straight trip to the semifinals for the Vikings.<\/p>\n
Cleveland State opened the match by picking up the doubles point, as Ella Franz<\/a>\/Melliz Petkova Mustafa<\/a> earned a 6-1 win at the top of the lineup and Jenna Redmile<\/a>\/Laura Tapia<\/a> posted a matching 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot.<\/p>\n Although IU Indy evened the match with a win at No. 5 singles then, the Vikings responded with an efficient 6-3, 6-3 victory from Franz at No. 1 singles to give the momentum back to Cleveland State.<\/p>\n Redmile then extended Cleveland State’s lead to 3-1 following a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles, before IU Indy closed the gap to 3-2 with a win at the No. 3 spot.<\/p>\n After the No. 2 and No. 6 matches went into third sets, Mancino and Geisz were able to quickly gain control on their respective courts, with Mancino eventually earning the 7-5, 3-6, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 spot to clinch the match for the Vikings.<\/p>\n Saturday’s semifinal contest against Oakland is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
