{"id":630140,"date":"2026-04-25T14:42:43","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T14:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/630140\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T14:42:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T14:42:43","slug":"arthur-leggett-medal-shai-bolton-provides-the-spark-to-ignite-fremanlte-dockers-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/630140\/","title":{"rendered":"Arthur Leggett Medal: Shai Bolton provides the spark to ignite Fremanlte Dockers\u2019 charge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Fremantle mid-forward Shai Bolton maintained his explosive start to the season by winning the Arthur Leggett Medal as best-afield in last night\u2019s 14-point victory in the Len Hall Tribute Game at Optus Stadium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Bolton had his third 30-plus possession games to go with another above 20 in the first seven rounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">He had 33 possessions against the Blues and had 15 of them in the final term to go with two early goals from 50m that put distance between the Dockers and the Blues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Bolton also had nine inside 50s to finish with 11 votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cIt\u2019s an honour to play in those games and I\u2019m super grateful,\u201d Bolton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThe round pays tribute to all the Anzacs who fought for Australia \u2013 it\u2019s important and we love playing in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">There were 54,100 fans in attendance, a record for a Len Hall Tribute Game and the second-highest non-derby home and away crowd.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/dce67407f3fab6836ee23b47615daf172c8bb646.jpg\" alt=\"Shai Bolton of the Dockers wins the Arthur Leggett Medal\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconShai Bolton of the Dockers wins the Arthur Leggett Medal Credit: Janelle St Pierre\/AFL Photos\/via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Bolton said his two final-term goals were kicked on instinct, but in retrospect he could have passed them off to teammates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI should have passed them off to be honest. I kicked them from 50 but there were probably a couple players in the corridor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cBut I just try to play to my strengths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">A dual premiership player at Richmond, Bolton is relishing more midfield minutes after filling the void created by Hayden Young\u2019s injury earlier in the season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">He told The West Australian earlier this season one of the most significant differences in 2026 has been the change to Fremantle\u2019s game plan and the increased speed of AFL.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI feel like I play my best when I am around the footy. I like playing forward as well. I like kicking a couple of goals. It\u2019s probably just a little bit more mid than forward,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cIt takes time with a lot of people when you come to a new club and the system is a bit different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThis year, we are playing a bit faster, which is good. In general, I think the AFL is playing a bit fast. It\u2019s the same as Richmond. We played pretty chaotic footy and pretty fast.
