Australian Olympian Gordon Ingate has died aged 100.<\/p>\n

Born in 1926 in Sydney, Ingate got his sea legs in the Sea Scouts aged nine, sparking a life-long love affair with sailing, competing and winning into his 90s.<\/p>\n

The Olympian competed in sailing at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games in the Tempest class, at the age of 46.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He had previously qualified for the Olympics two times.<\/p>\n

Ingate continued to compete for more than half a century after Munich.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He won the Australian Championships Dragon class title four times, the last at the age of 94 as the oldest champion in the sport’s history.<\/p>\n

President of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), Ian Chesterman, paid tribute to Ingate and his extraordinary contribution to sailing and its community.<\/p>\n

“Gordon’s was a life exceptionally well-lived,” said Mr Chesterman in a statement on the AOC’s website.<\/p>\n

“His contribution to sailing, in particular, was enormous and he held a special place in that community as well.<\/p>\n

“He had a remarkable record as a sportsman, but also as someone who made a real difference across his 100 years. A truly exceptional person.”<\/p>\n

Mr Chesterman also offered his condolences to Ingate’s family and friends, adding: “He will be missed, but will be so warmly remembered by us all.”<\/p>\n

Vice President of the AOC and long-time friend of Ingate, Matt Allen, described him as one of Australia’s most accomplished and loved sailors.<\/p>\n

“Gordon will be remembered for his many achievements in Sailing including the Olympics, Americas Cup, Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, and many years in the Dragon Class,” Mr Allen said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Mr Allen said the Olympian celebrated his 100th birthday in March with many of his friends and family by his side.<\/p>\n

“Gordon was the life of the party, as always,” Mr Allen said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
