One day, while working as a kite surfing instructor on the island of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania, Ferhat Ad<\/a> and a friend noticed something peculiar. There, along the beach, was something that, at first, seemed inexplicable.<\/p>\n

\u201cI suddenly spotted a piece of plastic moving across the sand,\u201d Ferhat told The Dodo. \u201cI actually turned to my friend and asked, \u2018Is that plastic moving, or am I seeing things?’\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a discarded blue bottle cap \u2014 and it had legs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe walked over to get a closer look, and that\u2019s when I realized what was happening,\u201d Ferhat said.<\/p>\n

Turns out, it was a hermit crab, who, following his instinct to inhabit a seashell<\/a>, had stumbled upon a piece of litter instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy first reaction was complete shock, followed by a deep sense of sadness,\u201d Ferhat said. \u201cEven though we hear about pollution all the time, I had never seen the direct impact of plastic on wildlife quite like this. It was a wake-up call.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ferhat and his friend decided to help set things right. They gathered some unoccupied seashells and presented them to the hermit crab.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened next was truly magical \u2014 watching him carefully inspect the options, choose the perfect one and finally leave that plastic cap behind was incredible,\u201d Ferhat said. \u201cIt was such a rewarding moment to see him back in a natural home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Afterward, Ferhat and his friend placed the hermit crab \u2014 now with a much more fitting home \u2014 back on the beach where they\u2019d first spotted him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a great feeling to know he was safe and back where he belonged,\u201d Ferhat said.<\/p>\n

The presence of trash and other pollutants in natural areas is more than merely an eyesore<\/a> \u2014 it harms the delicate balance required to sustain all living creatures.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope this story inspires people to be more mindful of their waste and to understand that nature doesn\u2019t need our plastic, but it occasionally needs our help to fix the mess we\u2019ve made,\u201d Ferhat said.<\/p>\n
