(Supplied: Sam Venn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Cronulla surf coach is now dedicated to raising awareness for mental health through world record surfing challenges and advocacy work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The worst thing that&#8217;s ever happened to me is going to help make the world a better place too, just like my dad did,&#8221; Blake says on ABC Radio National&#8217;s <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/allinthemind\/\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/channel\/2884640\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">All in the Mind<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What is post-traumatic growth?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The term post-traumatic growth has been around since the mid-1990s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[It&#8217;s a] psychological transformation that people go through as the result of the struggle with a traumatic event,&#8221; Blake says.<\/p>\n<p>Mental health struggles are part of the process<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The factors that may lead to someone experiencing post-traumatic growth are unclear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There isn&#8217;t one type of person who&#8217;s most likely to go through the transition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Professor Harms says there does seem to be a small correlation with post-traumatic stress disorder or feelings of extreme distress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So it seems to be that there has to be quite [a] significant degree of trauma disruption for trauma growth to occur,&#8221; (Getty: J Studios)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This struggle with trauma might look like mental health challenges such as intense grief or suicidal behaviour, Dr Andriessen says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Blake says the loss of his dad was incredibly difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">During this time, Blake&#8217;s own mental health issues rose to the surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I realised that checking the bank accounts seven times a day and obsessively thinking about not being good enough, lying in bed awake late at night and waking up in the morning and ruminating on things wasn&#8217;t good mental health,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>How suicide bereavement differs from other kinds of grief<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Grief following a loss by suicide is complicated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Loading Instagram content<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Andriessen says the impact of a suicide loss usually has lifelong consequences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">People may experience anxiety, depression, sleep issues, difficulty eating, and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There&#8217;s also an elevated risk of suicide in people who are bereaved by this kind of loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Research has found that children of a parent who dies by suicide are three times as likely to later die by suicide themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Blake says he didn&#8217;t feel like himself for five years following his dad&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A question I always ask myself is, &#8216;Why does it hurt so much with the bereavement of suicide?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think it&#8217;s just the uncertainties of what you could have done, how you didn&#8217;t know, what didn&#8217;t you see.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And I think that&#8217;s where the pain lies \u2026 you don&#8217;t have all the answers to it, and you never will.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grief doesn&#8217;t have to equal growth<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Experiences of post-traumatic growth can vary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Some people find value in social relationships, for others they may go through a career change,&#8221; Dr Andriessen says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Illustration of two people hugging each other. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/f86ccd73432e781cb425334def2e6855.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">It&#8217;s important to consider timing when talking about post-traumatic growth in order be sensitive towards the diversity of people&#8217;s experiences, Professor Louise Harms says. (Getty: oxygen)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He also says it&#8217;s hard to estimate how common post-traumatic growth is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some research suggests that between 20 to 50 per cent of people will experience this kind of growth following a traumatic event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But not everyone will experience post-traumatic growth, and that&#8217;s OK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t mean that there is something wrong with them,&#8221; Dr Andriessen says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not essential for processing grief in a healthy way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Harms says she doesn&#8217;t want people to feel pressure to go through post-traumatic growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s never about minimising people&#8217;s real distress and the disruption of negative trauma,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And even if someone experiences post-traumatic growth, it doesn&#8217;t ease the pain they may feel, Professor Harms adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For those people, their trauma may still just be as alive in their daily life as the growth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Turning pain into positivity<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Blake has been able to channel both his grief and love of surfing into advocacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He says organising the world&#8217;s largest paddle out last year at Cronulla Beach was his way of giving back to his community.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image of a thousand surfers on their boards in the ocean.
