Gold Coast coach Damien Hardwick has been left fuming after a 50 metre penalty cost his team a goal in the third quarter of his side’s loss to Hawthorn.

The Hawks led for the whole afternoon in the 16.16. (112) to 9.9. (69) win, getting out to a 46-point lead in the first half.

But the Suns came hard in the third term, and got within nine points and had the momentum.

Hawthorn defender Tom Barrass took a contested mark on the wing late in the third term and was then awarded a 50m penalty as the umpire enforced the stand rule.

Gold Coast debutant Jamarra Ugle-Hagan was standing on the mark, and while the umpire yelled “clear out”, Suns ruckman Jarrod Witts did just that.

But the umpire wanted Witts to stand on the mark, and for Ugle-Hagan to clear out of the area, and thus called for the 50m penalty.

The cameras cut to Hardwick’s fury in the box at the decision, while Witts, Ugle-Hagan and Christian Petracca all looked confused.

“Damien Hardwick is not happy. Christian Petracca is not happy. They’re pleading their case,” commentator Dwayne Russell said on Fox Footy.

Former St Kilda star Leigh Montagna gave his analysis of the confusion that caused the free kick: “He didn’t say his name. He didn’t tell Jamarra to move out. Witts thought it was him. Jamarra thought he was on the mark and the confusion has resulted in a 50m penalty.”

“The umpire is yelling stand, and then he’s saying move away, so Witts looks at the umpire and moves away, but he was actually talking to Ugle-Hagan, but he never said his name. Damien Hardwick is fuming about it, and I can understand why.”

Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy could not believe the decision, and is not a fan of the rule in general.

“It’s got to be the most hated rule in the history of the game, the stand rule, and this is the reason why,” Healy said.

“I think it’s going to get a good run in the post match analysis.”

Barrass kicked his first goal as a Hawk, and his second career goal, as a result; and the momentum of the game flipped.

From there, it was all Hawthorn and the Suns’ comeback ran out of steam in Tasmania.

It’s a big win for the Hawks against a fellow contender, entrenching themselves inside the top four for another week.

Speaking after the game, Hardwick said the updated stand rule is just causing confusion across the competition.

“We went through three examples that the AFL sent to us that should be 50. There was one clear one that we thought the rule was brought in for and there were two others that are just causing confusion,” he said.

“The Max Gawn-Ben Miller one last night I tried to clarify that with the umpires before the game and everyone has a different interpretation. From what I can gather, the umpire called stand so Jamarra and Jarrod are standing and then Jarrod leaves because the umpire says ‘move out’ and all of a sudden it is a 50.

“It’s like, common sense has to prevail at some stage. The game is hard enough for the umpires at present and with the holding the ball stuff and this manning of the mark stuff. Let’s just simplify it. I don’t know what that looks like.”

Jack Gunston was once again the star inside 50, kicking 5.4 and closing in on Gold Coast key forward Ben King, who kicked two, in the Coleman Medal race.

For the Hawks, Karl Amon led the way with 31 disposals, while captain Jai Newcombe found 30 and six tackles.

Gold Coast captain Noah Anderson picked up 31 touches in his return from injury, while Bailey Humphrey and Ned Long both kicked two goals apiece.

In his first game as a Sun, Ugle-Hagan kicked an early goal, had a goal assist and took five marks in the loss.

The Hawks will now prepare to take on Collingwood on Thursday night in what looms as a huge game, while Gold Coast will host fellow expansion side GWS next Sunday night.

[560
638,64,63,55,639,85
post-631228","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-afl","tag-afl","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-australian-football-league","tag-australianfootballleague","tag-sports
["GET
