Noah Hawley<\/a> is not a shy dude when it comes to giving his opinion on the world of making TV\u2014something he proved yet again this week during a conversation at Canneseries, the international TV festival that shares a location with the world\u2019s most famous film fest. That includes clearly labeling the true competition for the television industry, which isn\u2019t any kind of rival studio, but, per Hawley, YouTube: \u201cOur biggest competition is\u00a0YouTube, which spends zero dollars to make anything,\u201d Hawley said, per\u00a0Variety<\/a>. \u201cYou\u2019re producing films and TV for hundreds of millions of dollars, and losing eyeballs every day to things that are free.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not that the Google-owned video site is the only threat from big tech\u2019s increased interest in entertainment over the last twenty years, in Hawley\u2019s reckoning: \u201cIt\u2019s a larger question about what tech companies have done to Hollywood\u2014we have all been impacted by it. They tend to come into the industry, flood it with money and everyone feels: \u2018Oh, it\u2019s a renaissance.\u2019 Then it all dries up.\u201d Which doesn\u2019t mean Hawley hasn\u2019t heard the siren song of AI. Referencing his currently between-seasons\u00a0Alien: Earth<\/a>, he noted that he hasn\u2019t dabbled in employing AI on the show yet, but, \u201cWe\u2019ve had these conversations. If I\u2019m spending $150 million to $170 million to make a season of Alien, that\u2019s a lot of money, and corporations are desperate to find ways to spend less. I remain open-minded about how storytellers could use it, but it shouldn\u2019t replace them.\u201d<\/p>\n

(We always love that \u201cstorytellers\u201d line from filmmakers flirting with AI, by the way, because it really underscores who some Hollywood types consider actual artists, and who\u2014i.e., special effects artists, among others\u2014 are just cogs it\u2019s safe to replace with computer-generated crap. But we digress.)<\/p>\n

As to specific shows, Hawley embraced his title as the \u201cfranchise whisperer,\u201d describing that his goal with\u00a0Alien\u00a0was to recapture the horror and wonder of learning about the alien lifecycle in the original film. And for\u00a0Fargo, he emphasized the political underpinnings of the show\u2019s fifth season, which aired back in 2023: \u201cIn Season 5, everyone in that show was a Republican. Different versions of a Republican, but still. I was trying very hard not to be political with a capital P, but to talk about the humanity underneath it all.\u201d<\/p>\n
