{"id":632319,"date":"2026-04-26T16:17:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T16:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/632319\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T16:17:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T16:17:10","slug":"scientists-are-decoding-these-towering-solar-structures-that-can-disrupt-earths-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/632319\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Are Decoding These Towering Solar Structures That Can Disrupt Earth\u2019s Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The mysteries of <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/ancient-solar-storms-played-a-key-role-in-the-emergence-of-life-on-earth-new-study-suggests\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar<\/a> prominences\u2014massive plasma structures floating above the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/esas-solar-orbiter-unlocks-the-mystery-of-the-suns-fastest-particles\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sun<\/a>\u2019s surface like gravity-defying ships, which can cause dangerous <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/u-s-naval-research-lab-tracked-a-solar-eruption-that-sent-a-shockwave-toward-earth-threatening-power-and-satellites\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar eruptions<\/a>\u2014are finally revealed in new research from Germany\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/tag\/max-planck-institute-for-astronomy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Max Planck Institute<\/a> for Solar System Research (MPS).<\/p>\n<p>These massive <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/solar-mystery-cracked-as-scientists-say-flares-may-superheat-ions-to-60-million-degrees\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar<\/a> structures can stretch for thousands of kilometers, appearing like flickering flames, yet at only around 10,000 degrees. This leaves them much cooler than the million-degree corona that surrounds them, while being close to 100 times denser.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in a new paper published in Nature Astronomy, researchers examine these enormous <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/800-years-ago-ancient-japanese-astronomers-recorded-a-massive-solar-storm-and-modern-space-weather-technology-just-confirmed-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar<\/a> features and their potential to erupt in events that can pose serious dangers to Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Solar Prominences Float Above the Surface<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSolar prominences are cool and dynamic plasma clouds hovering in the hot solar atmosphere,\u201d lead author Dr. Lisa-Marie Zessner explained to The Debrief. \u201cThey can be found all over the sun and can have very different shapes, sizes, and lifetimes. The heavy prominence plasma is supported against gravity by magnetic fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe density of the prominence material is typically two orders of magnitude higher than the density of the surrounding corona,\u201d Zessner continued. \u201cA comparison to the typical density ratio might be a piece of wood (a bit dependent on the type of wood), so we could, for example, say that this is roughly like if a wooden ship were floating in Earth\u2019s atmosphere (at least close to ground level).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Danger of Solar Prominences<\/p>\n<p>These swathes of matter held aloft above the solar surface are potential ticking time bombs. They can often remain stable for weeks or even months before either fading into oblivion or exploding, at which point they drive charged solar particles into space.<\/p>\n<p>The latter possibility presents a major potential concern for us on Earth. Earth\u2019s electrical and communications infrastructure may be protected to some degree by the planet\u2019s atmosphere, but extreme solar events can still pass through, potentially severely impacting our ground-based systems.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, as more and more communications and crucial GPS capabilities are placed on orbital satellites, those systems are even more vulnerable to space weather impacts. Understanding violent space events, such as solar prominences, is essential to accurately predict space weather and mitigate threats to our infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo protect Earth\u2019s infrastructure in time, reliable forecasts of dangerous space weather are needed. A deeper understanding of prominences is a crucial piece of the puzzle,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1125053\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said co-author Sami K. Credit: MPS<br \/>\nThe Life of a Solar Prominence<\/p>\n<p>A major feature of the new work is the identification of the processes that balance a solar prominence as it gains and loses mass. The researchers developed complex simulations of interactions between the solar plasma and the magnetic field. Never before had researchers examined how the Sun\u2019s deeper, cooler layers may be influencing solar prominences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Sun\u2019s atmosphere, the magnetic field is the driving force,\u201d Zessner said. \u201cIt also plays a decisive role in all processes that contribute to the formation and maintenance of the prominences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The change in temperature across the sun\u2019s layers also influences solar prominences: the chromosphere, the lower portion of the atmosphere, reaches 20,000 degrees, while the surface reaches only 6,000 degrees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/new-details-emerge-in-development-of-u-s-air-force-weapon-marking-a-new-generation-of-air-power\/\" class=\"mask-img\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Stand-in-Attack-Weapon-120x120.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-codetipi-15zine-120-120 size-codetipi-15zine-120-120 wp-post-image lazyload\" alt=\"air force weapons\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 120px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 120\/120;\"\/>\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s simulation assumed that solar prominences tend to form at the dip between two magnetic field arches and revealed that turbulent, small-scale magnetic field movements pushed plasma out in bursts, which became trapped in the dip. Once the prominence forms, it is caught between steady plasma loss in the form of rain on the solar surface and further bursts that add to its mass, potentially influencing or triggering an eruption.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur calculations show, more realistically than ever before, how both processes interact to supply the prominences with material and thus keep them alive,\u201d Zessner explained.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier work modeling these provinces showed how the prominences condensed, but overlooked how they were supplied with plasma over time.
