{"id":632833,"date":"2026-04-26T22:11:23","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T22:11:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/632833\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T22:11:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T22:11:23","slug":"platypuses-need-threatened-species-recognition-in-nsw-researcher-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/632833\/","title":{"rendered":"Platypuses need threatened species recognition in NSW, researcher says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A leading researcher is calling for the platypus to be classified as a threatened species in New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The native monotreme is classified as endangered in South Australia, and vulnerable in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Lead researcher for the University of NSW Platypus Conservation Initiative Gilad Bino said the species was only &#8220;hanging on, not thriving&#8221; in NSW and the Murray-Darling Basin.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think that platypus should be listed as a threatened species,&#8221; Dr Bino said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Unfortunately we don&#8217;t have enough data to support that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re very deficient in our understanding of how platypuses are faring.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More proof needed<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">If a species is listed as threatened under the\u00a0<a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dcceew.gov.au\/environment\/epbc\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999<\/a>, it receives legal protection and must be considered in environmental approvals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The government develops conservation advice and, where needed, recovery plans outlining threats and actions to support the species&#8217; survival.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2022 the federal government found the platypus &#8220;was unlikely to be eligible for listing as a threatened species&#8221; and the NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee accepted that finding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The state&#8217;s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water said in a statement that the platypus was not classified as a threatened species in NSW due to a lack of data confirming the extent of population decline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The statement said while there was evidence numbers might be decreasing, it remained unclear whether the species met the threshold of a 30 per cent decline over three generations, which is required for threatened status. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Close up of a platypus face, poking out of a box.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5e21967e999ccdf2fa0f86c02e39bb1e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The platypus is listed as &#8220;near threatened&#8221; on the International Union for Conservation of Nature&#8217;s Red List. (Supplied: Department of Environment and Heritage)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2014, the platypus was upgraded from &#8220;least concern&#8221; to &#8220;near threatened\u201d on the International Union for Conservation of Nature&#8217;s (IUCN&#8217;s) Red List, following an assessment led by Charles Darwin University professor John Woinarski.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are due to update that assessment over the next 12 months, but haven&#8217;t yet started collating the evidence,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The IUCN Red List is the world&#8217;s most comprehensive source on the conservation status of animal, plant and fungi species, and is widely regarded as a key indicator of global biodiversity health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Our assessment in 2014 was that the rate of decline over three generations approached but did not exceed 30 per cent,&#8221; Professor Woinarski said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Fragmented&#8217; populations<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Work is underway to collect data and improve knowledge about the platypus, after a <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-11-10\/platypus-vulnerable-to-extinction-researchers-say\/10477902\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report eight years ago<\/a> warned a lack of knowledge about its population made the species vulnerable to extinction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A brown platypus swimming in a creek or river with the top half of its body above water with its eyes open.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/56181c74c30427335d65830aab7daecc.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Researchers are assessing the size and location of the platypus population. (Supplied: CEWH)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve been disrupting the natural flow regime and fragmenting and isolating platypus populations,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Platypus are pretty much wiped out from the mainland in South Australia.
