{"id":633380,"date":"2026-04-27T04:46:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T04:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/633380\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T04:46:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T04:46:21","slug":"indigenous-veteran-di-ryder-slams-distracting-booing-at-anzac-day-welcome-to-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/633380\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous veteran Di Ryder slams &#8216;distracting&#8217; booing at Anzac Day Welcome to Country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Whadjuk Noongar elder who was booed while giving a Welcome to Country at Perth&#8217;s Anzac Day dawn service says she was &#8220;mortified&#8221; but will not back down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Army veteran and community leader Di Ryder had just started her speech on Saturday morning, saying &#8220;welcome to Noongar country&#8221;, when some in the crowd began to boo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The interjections became louder when she continued by outlining her military service, at which point Ms Ryder paused, repeated herself, and continued with her speech.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It was distracting, I&#8217;ve got to be honest, but then I thought &#8216;I&#8217;m here for a reason&#8217;,&#8221; she told 102.5 ABC Radio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The reason was to welcome people to Noongar Boodja and that&#8217;s what I stood firm with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I had a right to be standing up there as a veteran and also a Noongar elder, and for me that was the thing, I should have been able to be there without being booed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I am mortified that it happened on Anzac Day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Ryder&#8217;s address was also interrupted a second time when she paid respect to &#8220;elders past and present&#8221; and acknowledged &#8220;our young people who will take our Noongar culture into the future&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-25\/anzac-day-hecklers-condemned-perth-wa-dawn-services-booing\/106606046\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perth ANZAC Day hecklers condemned as &#8216;disgusting, cretins&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Leaders have condemned &#8220;cretins&#8221; who interjected and booed at Perth and Western Australian Anzac Day ceremonies, with the premier labelling their actions &#8220;disgusting and disrespectful&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Leaders were quick to condemn the booing, with RSL WA chief executive Stephen Barton telling the crowd &#8220;we will not be bullied&#8221; and Premier Roger Cook labelling the booing &#8220;disgusting and disrespectful&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Police issued five people with move-on notices after the heckling, in addition to five that were handed out before the service began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I can&#8217;t put into words how I felt that they would use that day to platform something like the Welcome to Country,&#8221; Ms Ryder said.<\/p>\n<p>Time to &#8216;make a stand&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The community leader said she had expected to be booed after a similar incident last year, but that it did little to soften the blow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As an Aboriginal person, you just accept that this is the way things will go until we make a stand, like the RSL did on Saturday,&#8221;  Ms Ryder said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She stood by Welcome to Country addresses as an important opportunity to acknowledge all Indigenous veterans who served in conflicts as far back as the Boer War, which Australia was involved in between 1899 and 1902.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two people walk down off a stage\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cf788bc506f6e400b17baace51531813.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Di Ryder with WA Governor Chris Dawson after she delivered her Welcome to Country address.
