The push for permanent protection for cyclists gained momentum in 2015 after the<a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/victoria\/italian-cyclist-alberto-paulon-killed-on-sydney-road-brunswick-remembered-by-work-colleagues-and-memorial-ride-20150302-13skbz.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> death of 25-year-old Italian chef Alberto Paulon<\/a>, who was killed in a \u201cdooring\u201d incident.<\/p>\n<p>In February, a 44-year-old Brunswick West woman died after falling from her bicycle on the busy road.<\/p>\n<p>Sydney Road is managed by the Department of Transport and Planning, not Merri-bek Council. In 2019, VicRoads <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/victoria\/which-of-these-five-designs-for-sydney-road-do-you-think-will-work-20190626-p521ed.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">released five design options<\/a> for bike paths along the road, including one that would entirely remove on-street parking to create fully protected lanes and wider footpaths. Merri-bek Council this week declined to comment on the Greens\u2019 proposal.<\/p>\n<p>While motoring group the RACV and advocacy body Bicycle Network have long supported removing parking for safety, trader associations in the area have consistently warned that losing spots would \u201cput traders out of business\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from advocacy group <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vicbug.app\/crash-analysis\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">VicBUG,<\/a> 72 cyclists have been involved in crashes on the Sydney Road strip since 2021, a figure second only to Chapel Street. A more detailed analysis shows the 9.05-kilometre corridor recorded 279 cyclist crashes between 2012 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Greens candidate Adam Pulford.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/677ab9b0b92ea70067474d06b7206952143f5ad3.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 jvMZxu\"\/>Greens candidate Adam Pulford.Jason South<\/p>\n<p>The Upfield bike path, which runs alongside the Upfield train line, will be closed during level crossing removal works starting in 2028, and the start government has <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.planning.vic.gov.au\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0028\/764524\/Attachment-10-Summary-of-Transport-Provisions.pdf?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAYnJpZBExeExSUjl0RUVzSXh1MVZVWHNydGMGYXBwX2lkEDIyMjAzOTE3ODgyMDA4OTIAAR5TdbC9OjxXZvo3B6eAGTm9U-pZvbiNc0zwzt00ZUIVc4M5lDVJ-nYyKVEskw_aem_x4PtVlcpSNQ1WRP8amS4PQ\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">issued some suggested detours<\/a> which involve cyclists navigating backstreets.<\/p>\n<p>However, Bicycle Network chief executive Alison McCormack predicted riders would likely ignore official detours and use Sydney Road regardless, which would create a dangerous situation without protected bike lanes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBackstreets are fine for local commuting but not for that mainstream commuting to and from the CBD,\u201d she said. \u201cWeaving around backstreets isn\u2019t a viable alternative \u2013 people need that link through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sydney Road Brunswick Association manager Troy Stuchbree said the calls for separated lanes were taking place without considering the impact on surrounding parking and roads.<\/p>\n<p>He called for a \u201cproper precinct plan\u201d involving all stakeholders to ensure the area remained economically viable for businesses.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>However, McCormack challenged the long-held fears of merchant groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been a lot of conversation from the traders about \u2018people might take my business away\u2019, but we strongly feel that might not be the case,\u201d she said. \u201cWe feel this is a great time to test that theory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neighbouring Yarra City Council reversed a decision to remove car parking in favour of wide protected bike lanes in Elizabeth Street, Richmond five years ago. It recently narrowed the lanes and re-introduced some street parking.<\/p>\n<p>A Victorian government spokesperson did not directly address the call for a Sydney Road trial, but said the Upfield bike path would be closed in stages to avoid prolonged disruption.
