MADRID \u2014\u00a0 Seven days in, the Madrid Open<\/a> and the players left in the field could really use a break.<\/p>\n

First, there was the torrent of withdrawals, some for acute injuries<\/a> and some for players managing their bodies, a month out from the climax of the clay swing at the French Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then came the pollen, yellow and white snowflakes of allergy-inducing grains from the vegetation around the Caja M\u00e1gica, the tennis center roughly six miles south of Madrid\u2019s city center. It swirled in the air and fell on the courts, sometimes in a blanket, reddening players\u2019 eyes and irritating their throats.<\/p>\n

Then came the sickness.<\/p>\n

The 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys withdrew due to illness April 24. Marin \u010cili\u0107, the 2014 U.S. Open champion, gave Jo\u00e3o Fonseca a walkover the following day. Liudmila Samsonova gave Linda Noskov\u00e1 one too.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi everyone,\u201d \u010cili\u0107 said on social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, I got food poisoning yesterday. After trying to recover all night, my body is unfortunately exhausted and not at the proper level to get into the battle.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the same day, seven-time Grand Slam champion Iga \u015awi\u0105tek retired in the third set of her match against Ann Li, having appeared to struggle in her practice and throughout the match. \u201cThe last two days were pretty terrible. I think I have some virus, so it\u2019s been some hours, fine, some hours, pretty bad,\u201d she said in a mixed zone afterward.<\/p>\n

Sunday, it was Coco Gauff\u2019s turn. She was puking in the bathroom between the first two sets of her three-set win over Sorana C\u00eerstea. Gauff teared up on and off throughout the afternoon on Court Manolo Santana. She said it was the worst she has felt on a tennis court \u2014 ever.<\/p>\n

Gauff said she felt \u201ca little weird\u201d Saturday night but woke up feeling fine. The nausea came on in the middle of the first set on a sun-splashed day in the Spanish capital. Then came some actual throwing up, in the bathroom and at the side of the court.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just didn\u2019t want to throw up in the middle of a point, which I almost did at one point,\u201d she told a huddle of reporters.<\/p>\n

She took some pills, which helped manage the queasiness. She told herself just to get through the second set so she wouldn\u2019t have to quit. But then C\u00eerstea started to spray errors and grow frustrated, and then Gauff found herself surviving the second set and cruising through the third.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a virus going around between the city and then I think the players got it, and then I think I got it from another player that was sick and their locker is close to mine,\u201d Gauff said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat can you do except just try to get through it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gauff\u2019s diagnosis of herself and the tournament put her in line with the event\u2019s organizers, who have had to work overtime trying to tamp down rumors that the food in the player dining area might be the source of the problems.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no issue with the food. It is a gastroenteritis virus, like any other virus, but the food is perfectly OK,\u201d Rafael Plaza, a spokesperson for the tournament, wrote in a message Sunday.<\/p>\n

The intestinal issue comes on the heels of the pollen struggles that have plagued the tournament in the past. Jannik Sinner mentioned it after a loss to Alexei Popyrin in 2021, and even for players who do not have severe hayfever, it can have enough of an impact on congestion and breathing to cause issues.<\/p>\n

There is plenty of overgrowth around the Caja M\u00e1gica, and a warm and dry spring has compounded the problem this year. Plaza said this has been the worst season for pollen in years. Climate change has made matters worse, extending the growing season. Some rain would help, and there is some in the forecast for the second week, but there isn\u2019t much the tournament can do to make it better. Madrid\u2019s largely idyllic climate this time of year comes with some disadvantages.<\/p>\n

Dr. Robby Sikka, the medical director for the Professional Tennis Players Association, said pollen-induced allergic reactions can go well beyond itchy eyes and runny noses.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor athletes, it can be a performance issue,\u201d Sikka wrote in a text message last week. \u201cWhen pollen counts are high, players are breathing huge volumes of air during long, high-intensity matches. If they are mouth-breathing, they bypass some of the nose\u2019s natural filtering system, so more pollen and irritants can reach the lower airways. That can trigger inflammation, coughing, chest tightness, or exercise-induced bronchospasm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gauff gave her on-court interview with an ice towel around her neck, putting it to her mouth several times as she spoke to try to avoid spreading it, and also keeping it close in case there were any lingering symptoms about to emerge. She said hydration and rest were on her schedule for the afternoon following the 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Cirstea.<\/p>\n

Caty McNally, who saved a match point with a nasty backhand drop shot before prevailing over Kate\u0159ina Siniakov\u00e1 in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(2), said the virus has spared her so far. After two years of injuries and surgery, McNally will make a rare appearance in the round of 16 at a WTA 1000 Monday and isn\u2019t taking any chances.<\/p>\n
