Springer Nature and Jisc have renewed their Open Access (OA) agreement, extending a long-running partnership aimed at expanding access to UK-led research.<\/p>\n
The renewed deal builds on more than a decade of collaboration between the two organisations. Since the introduction of one of the UK\u2019s first OA agreements in 2016, uptake of open access publishing among UK-authored research has risen significantly, reaching nearly 80% in 2025, underlining the role of the Jisc agreement in supporting centrally funded OA routes.<\/p>\n
More than 46,000 UK-funded articles have been published under the agreement to date, generating over 231 million global downloads of content published via the deal.<\/p>\n
Carolyn Honour, Chief Commercial Officer, Springer Nature, said:<\/p>\n

Running from 2026 to 2028, the extended agreement will provide authors at more than 120 UK institutions with continued access to open publishing routes and subscription content.<\/p>\n
Key elements of the agreement include uncapped OA publishing across more than 2,000 hybrid journals published by Springer Nature, alongside reading access to over 2,300 Springer journals. Authors will also benefit from uncapped OA publishing in 41 Nature Portfolio journals, widening opportunities to publish in some of the most influential titles in the field.<\/p>\n
The agreement also maintains reading access to titles including Nature Reviews, Nature Protocols and Scientific American, supporting researchers across the full research lifecycle, while extending full OA options to accommodate a range of funding routes.<\/p>\n
Beyond direct author benefits, the deal is designed to support participating institutions by providing clear and centrally managed pathways to OA publishing. This is expected to broaden participation across institutions and disciplines, while simplifying workflows and reducing administrative burden.<\/p>\n
