The Canadiens did not like the hit or how they felt the Capitals were embellishing to get some calls. They did not like the officiating in general. After the game, they made their displeasure very clear.

“I’ll be careful with my words, but it’s hard to watch some of these calls,” Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis said then. “To me, tonight, a lot of the mandate was about embellishing tonight.”

This year, St. Louis could have said the same thing after the Canadiens lost Game 4 to the Lightning 3-2, evening the series at two games apiece and giving home-ice advantage back to Tampa Bay. Game 5 is Wednesday night in Tampa.

It was hard not to look at Lightning superstar Nikita Kucherov writhing in pain after taking a cross-check from Jake Evans and slamming into the boards, with the penalty giving the Lightning a five-on-three advantage for 1:11, then healing in time to take part in that two-man advantage and wonder if he was not selling the call just a little bit.

The Canadiens were certainly wondering that after the game. Defenceman Kaiden Guhle took a big breath when asked about it, presumably to gather himself before answering.

“I don’t know, I don’t want to give you any bites,” he finally said. “I think you know what I’m going to say about that.”

He didn’t say it, nor did St. Louis, even though you know he was thinking it. No one on the Canadiens did.

“We didn’t play a good enough third period. We take three penalties. They’re a veteran team with talent, they know how to make us take penalties,” St. Louis said in French. “You can’t give the referee a chance to call it. It’s a fine line. When you’re leading, you need to be careful.”

“They know how to make us take penalties.” St. Louis said it again to close his media availability. He never used the word “embellishment” but it was easy to see what he was getting at. Still, he never used that word, unlike last year.

The Canadiens were leading 2-0 late in the second period when Lightning defenceman Max Crozier leveled Juraj Slafkovský with a massive open-ice hit that felt eerily similar to Wilson’s. The Lightning did not score on the same shift the way the Capitals did then, but they did shortly thereafter, in the final minute of the period. The circumstances were not the same, but the narrative sure could be.

Except the Canadiens don’t seem willing to let it.

“They’re allowed to make a good hit,” Canadiens forward Zack Bolduc said. “We can do that too. It’s part of the game, and we can’t let a good hit affect our team game, our collective game.”

Officials Wes McCauley and, in particular, Brandon Blandina did not have a great night. Officials are not infallible, and they were fallible in this game, but that is true of many games. What’s important in any game, and more so in the playoffs, is not to give them an opportunity to be fallible.

That means, if you’re Evans, not putting your stick in the small of the back of Kucherov, one of the best players in the world, and allowing him to go crashing into the boards and writhe in pain.

That also means, if you’re Oliver Kapanen, not clipping Dominic James in the face as you’re coming back to defend the rush, which looked to be a phantom penalty but was in fact a legitimate call. It just came earlier than people thought.

Here’s the Kapanen penalty.

When I saw it…I thought obvious high-stick above hashmarks — and those penalties are being called in all series. Obviously, Canadiens (and their fans) feel arm went up late or actual penalty was ignored/missed. pic.twitter.com/fTgS9coIzm

— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) April 27, 2026

Owning and accepting how you lose is an important part of maturing into a playoff-hardened team. The Lightning are already there, fully aware stuff happens in the playoffs that is out of your control and that you need to focus on what is in your control.

The Canadiens’ reaction to this loss suggests they are getting to a similar place. They did not react to having a two-goal lead late in the second period the proper way, much like they did not react to having a 2-1 lead in the third period of Game 2 the proper way. Leading so late in both their losses in this series is an important lesson for a young team.

This team needs those lessons because as optimistic as everyone is about the Canadiens’ chances in this series and these playoffs, the reality they are still learning what it takes to win at this time of year.

Accepting responsibility for a loss no matter how much responsibility you might think falls to the officiating is a sign of growth. That will serve the Canadiens well as they embark on what is now a best-of-three series, with the Lightning again holding home-ice advantage.

The Canadiens find themselves in this situation despite not getting a single five-on-five goal from their top line of Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Slafkovský. On the one hand, that can be seen as a positive: One of the most productive forward lines in the NHL will bust out eventually and allow the Canadiens to win this series.

But patience can sometimes be a death knell in the playoffs, and Game 4 showed how a lack of it can be a virtue. Tampa coach Jon Cooper knew he needed to get Brayden Point and Kucherov going, so he put them with Brandon Hagel, breaking up what had been a dominant duo of Anthony Cirelli and Hagel through the first three games.

It worked.

Prior to this series, Slafkovský was asked multiple questions about how much he benefited from being separated from Suzuki and Caufield in November and playing with Kapanen and Ivan Demidov. He explained how much it helped him learn that he can drive his own line. It gave him confidence, which he carried with him when he was reunited with Suzuki and Caufield just after the trade deadline on March 6.

After answering all those questions, Slafkovský smiled and said, “You never know when we’ll see it again.”

It can be hard to be impatient as a coach who is focused on the process, a belief that continually stacking good actions upon good actions will lead to results. But that is a large-sample bet, and the playoffs are a short-sample endeavour. The Canadiens have gone four games without a goal from their top line, and they potentially have three games left to show real playoff growth from last year.

They showed a lot it in how they reacted to this Game 4 loss compared to the one a year ago, but Cooper’s proactive impatience for his big guns to show up might be a path St. Louis needs to follow.

St. Louis has loved to say throughout this rebuild that he’s shown aggressive patience, that he’s been unwilling to simply wait for development to happen, that he’s tried to intervene to help that process along.

It might be time for more of that. Because while the Canadiens are now guaranteed to play at least one more playoff game than they played a year ago, ensuring they play at least one more playoff round is still within their grasp.

MONTREAL — The circumstances were not exactly the same, but they were pretty close.
