{"id":634232,"date":"2026-04-27T14:32:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T14:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/634232\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T14:32:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T14:32:09","slug":"australians-will-call-bullshit-on-green-energy-without-clearer-benefits-rudd-warns-australian-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/634232\/","title":{"rendered":"Australians will call \u2018bullshit\u2019 on green energy without clearer benefits, Rudd warns | Australian politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kevin Rudd has described Donald Trump\u2019s cuts to support for green industries as \u201cunfortunate\u201d, warning that Australians would conclude the clean transition was \u201cbullshit\u201d if it did not offer tangible benefits to their lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But \u2013 in some of his first comments since finishing his term as Australia\u2019s ambassador to the US \u2013 the former prime minister said climate policies would have staying power if they delivered affordable prices, a reliable energy supply and new job opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cPolicy continuity will be supported if we continue not just good messaging about this, but actually deliver price outcomes, security of supply, electricity supply outcomes, new industries and new jobs, which people touch, see, feel, hear and have in their daily experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOtherwise, they conclude it\u2019s all bullshit and therefore it doesn\u2019t work,\u201d he said, addressing the Melbourne launch of Power, Prosperity and Planet, a book by the former diplomat and Smart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/energy-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Energy<\/a> Council international fellow Thom Woodroofe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Now leading the <a href=\"https:\/\/asiasociety.org\/asia-society-announces-appointment-hon-kevin-rudd-president-and-ceo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York-based Asia Society<\/a> thinktank, Rudd said Australia should \u201cseize the opportunity presented by what is now unfolding in Iran and the strait of Hormuz \u2013 and frankly the shock which working people across the world are now experiencing in terms of continued hydrocarbon dependency\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey are experiencing the physical terror of becoming insecure in their supply of what they need to drive to work if they\u2019re still using a gasoline-based car,\u201d Rudd said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf you\u2019ve got an EV at the moment, or frankly, if you\u2019ve got a hybrid, you are much less dependent on what comes out of the geopolitics of the Gulf at present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said Australia had an \u201cenormous comparative advantage\u201d in green iron, steel and renewable energy due to its \u201cvast slabs of real estate, vast amounts of sunshine\u201d and proximity to export markets in south-east Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking at the same event, the former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull said \u201cwe\u2019re in a position now where we can say to the people, you can have cheaper power, affordable power, reliable power with renewables. And that\u2019s why nobody is building new coal power stations in Australia\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The former Liberal leader described the Liberal party\u2019s decision to preference One Nation in the Farrer byelection as \u201ca retrograde move\u201d, describing One Nation as \u201cright out there in the climate change denial business\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rudd said the Biden administration\u2019s Inflation Reduction Act was an example of trying to \u201cthread the needle\u201d between building the green industries of the future, delivering green energy to American working families and creating new green jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">For Biden and his team, \u201cthis was about driving the message home into the red states, into working families and creating new green jobs \u2013 so that when inevitably, political change occurred in Washington, it will be harder to pull it back\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cUnfortunately, much of this has been pulled back.
