{"id":634604,"date":"2026-04-27T18:39:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T18:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/634604\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T18:39:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T18:39:08","slug":"taylor-swift-files-trademarks-for-voice-and-image-amid-concern-over-ai-misuse-taylor-swift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/634604\/","title":{"rendered":"Taylor Swift files trademarks for voice and image amid concern over AI misuse | Taylor Swift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/taylor-swift\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Swift<\/a> has filed applications to trademark her voice and image in a move seemingly designed to protect against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/artificialintelligenceai\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI<\/a> misuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On 24 April, Swift\u2019s company TAS Rights Management filed three trademark applications, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/music\/news\/taylor-swift-trademark-voice-likeness-ai-misuse-1236731401\/#recipient_hashed=ccf9c660a33988694684392c981dbee6fb2ff125f15c8e46e254ec4c8a518efc&amp;recipient_salt=eb2653ff13566b6cf0ad111a2ed6808826afd9cd120530a085d5a48b735ef06d&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=exacttarget&amp;utm_campaign=newsalert&amp;utm_content=678756_04-27-2026&amp;utm_term=38770274?utm_medium=&amp;utm_source=&amp;utm_campaign=&amp;utm_content=&amp;utm_id=\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Variety<\/a> reports. Two of these are sound trademarks which cover Swift saying the phrases \u201cHey, it\u2019s Taylor Swift\u201d and \u201cHey, it\u2019s Taylor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The third application seeks to trademark the well-known shot of Swift on stage during her Eras Tour, describing \u201ca photograph of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/taylor-swift\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Swift<\/a> holding a pink guitar, with a black strap and wearing a multi-colored iridescent bodysuit with silver boots. She is standing on a pink stage in front of a multi-colored microphone with purple lights in the background.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The move comes after Matthew McConaughey trademarked his famous \u201cAll right, all right, all right\u201d catchphrase from 1993\u2019s Dazed and Confused in addition to other unauthorized uses of his image and voice this January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cMy team and I want to know that when my voice or likeness is ever used, it\u2019s because I approved and signed off on it,\u201d McConaughey said in a statement. \u201cWe want to create a clear perimeter around ownership with consent and attribution the norm in an AI world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Swift\u2019s likeness has been used in many AI images and deepfakes, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2024\/jan\/28\/taylor-swift-x-searches-blocked-fake-explicit-images\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fake AI-created sexually explicit images<\/a>. In 2024, Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/article\/2024\/aug\/24\/trump-taylor-swift-deepfakes-ai\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> numerous AI images to Truth Social that falsely showed Swift endorsing him for president. The Guardian has approached a representative for Swift for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAttempting to register a celebrity\u2019s spoken voice is a new use of trademark registration that has not been tested in court before,\u201d said the intellectual property attorney Josh Gerben in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gerbenlaw.com\/blog\/taylor-swift-moves-to-trademark-her-voice-and-image-as-ai-threats-grow\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blogpost<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHistorically, singers relied on copyright law to protect their recorded music,\u201d he added. \u201cBut AI technologies now allow users to generate entirely new content that mimics an artist\u2019s voice without copying an existing recording, creating a gap that trademarks may help fill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBy registering specific phrases tied to her voice, Swift could potentially challenge not only identical reproductions, but also imitations that are \u2018confusingly similar\u2019, a key standard in trademark law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Swift owns more than 50 trademarks related to her name and album titles as well as key song lyrics.
