{"id":634725,"date":"2026-04-27T19:56:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T19:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/634725\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T19:56:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T19:56:10","slug":"dave-brailsford-repackages-aborted-man-united-missions-at-ineos-grenadiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/634725\/","title":{"rendered":"Dave Brailsford repackages aborted Man United \u2018missions\u2019 at Ineos Grenadiers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sir Dave Brailsford has launched yet another \u201cmission\u201d after a brief but difficult spell at Manchester United, with the objective of delivering an eighth Tour de France victory for Ineos Grenadiers.<\/p>\n<p>At Old Trafford, Brailsford presented his performance plan in the form of \u201cMission 21\u201d (a 21st league title) for the men\u2019s team and \u201cMission 1\u201d (a first Women\u2019s Super League title) for United\u2019s women.<\/p>\n<p>Brailsford, however, did not get the opportunity to deliver on that vision, with The Times revealing last June that he would be stepping away from United after only 18 months to focus instead on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/jim-ratcliffe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sir Jim Ratcliffe<\/a>\u2019s cycling team and his broader role as director of sport for Ineos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   height=\"1754\" width=\"2313\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/98f32b8c-c916-43e5-a481-679322238ee1.jpg\" alt=\"Dave Brailsford and Sir Jim Ratcliffe at Wembley Stadium during The FA Cup match.\" class=\"wp-image-12239379\"\/>Brailsford alongside Ratcliffe during the cycling supremo\u2019s short-lived advisory role at UnitedAlamy\/Sportimage <\/p>\n<p>Since returning to cycling the 62-year-old former British Cycling boss has delivered what has been described as a strikingly similar presentation to the one given to United\u2019s players, with \u201cMission 8\u201d now the key objective for staff and riders at the Grenadiers \u2014 formerly known as Team Sky.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under Sky and then the Ineos banner, the team won seven Tour de France titles in eight years between 2012 and 2019, with Sir Bradley Wiggins securing a historic first win for a British rider. Chris Froome then won four Tours for the team, followed by further victories for Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But an eighth Tour win looks every bit as difficult a challenge as another Premier League title, given the sheer dominance of Tadej Pogacar and UAE Team Emirates XRG.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The recruitment of two talented riders in Oscar Onley, the 23-year-old Scot, and K\u00e9vin Vauquelin, the 25-year-old from France, looks to be a step in the right direction, but having the biggest budget was also central to the team\u2019s previous success and that means increasing their revenue beyond the \u00a330million being pumped in annually by Ratcliffe at present.<\/p>\n<p>Last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/sport\/cycling\/article\/sir-jim-ratcliffe-new-ineos-grenadiers-cycling-sponsor-100m-deal-rvld0zzlq\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Times reported <\/a>that Ratcliffe was preparing to relinquish the naming rights of the Ineos Grenadiers team by securing a new co-title sponsor, the Danish IT firm Netcompany.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That deal, believed to be worth \u00a3100million over five years, is due to be announced in London on Tuesday.
