Revenue quadrupled to $US416 billion ($580 billion).

But at some point, in the past few years, Cook was left behind.

A cautious and thoughtful man who prioritised user privacy, a once winning combination that helped catapult Apple into global corporate dominance, Cook’s approach was perceived as a dragging anchor in the race for artificial intelligence (AI) domination

Apple has always had an insular approach. It forged its own pathway, developing technology and even its own chips in-house. Its hardware outlasted the opposition.

But around this time last year, investors began asking questions. Why was Cook underspending on AI development, especially considering the frenzied activity of his competitors?

And why was he content to let Siri, the AI application first introduced by Apple back in 2010, languish?

Apple scruffs

Cook may well have made the right choice.

At the beginning of this year, Apple’s main competitors — Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Microsoft — pledged to outlay a combined $US650 billion in capital expenditure, most of which will be directed to AI.

The thinking within Apple, or at least by Cook, was that AI would become a mere commodity to be bought and sold.

Cook hooked Apple up with long-time nemesis Google to provide AI technology for Siri for what is believed to be about $US1 billion ($1.4 billion), a mere fraction of Google’s AI outlay and a pittance when compared to the industry splurge.

Google has invested heavily in AI technology. (Getty: Alain Jocard)

But for many, that financially conservative approach threatened to undermine the very essence of Apple’s existence; its independence.

Google technology powers Android phones. There were fears that allowing the rival to power a key segment of its own platform, the intelligence side, may sideline Apple into merely providing hardware.

As concerns mounted midway through last year, Apple shares were slammed before a Christmas recovery. This year, they’ve flatlined.

On an annual basis, Apple delivered a 29 per cent return, which doesn’t sound unreasonable. But it pales in comparison with Google parent Alphabet, which delivered 114 per cent growth.

Is your money putting you out of work?

There’s a lot riding on Cook’s replacement, John Ternus, a man who has been involved in every major product release since he joined in 2001.

Australian investors have about $9 billion invested in the company through our major superannuation funds. Australian Super accounts for about one-third of that.

Like many global investors, a large chunk of Australia’s $4 trillion super pot has been directed towards AI and the handful of US corporations that dominate the sphere.

Australians’ super savings exposed as clouds gather over tech boom

Amongst tech investors the penny has finally dropped about just what the future may hold, and many are backing off or at least rethinking their strategy.

The most recent estimates are that Australian exposure to artificial investment firms totals about $140 billion, but the recent resurgence on Wall Street, driven in large part by a recovery in some of the biggest tech firms, undoubtedly would have lifted that.

In the past week, competition among the tech giants continued, despite the well-aired concerns the whole thing resembles an enormous financial bubble.

Amazon tipped $US5 billion ($7 billion) into AI’s rising star, Anthropic. That was on top of the $US8 billion ($11.1 billion) already committed, hinting there was $US20 billion ($28 billion) more to come.

Anthropic, in turn, agreed to spend more than $US100 billion ($140 billion) on Amazon’s cloud services over the next decade.

Then, over the weekend, Google stumped up $US10 billion ($14 billion) for Anthropic with another $US30 billion ($42 billion) on offer, strengthening an already close relationship.

Meanwhile, the race to build data centres shows no sign of abating.

Despite the imminent threat of a global energy crisis, there is no shortage of cash being thrown at AI infrastructure firms and the data centres that consume vast quantities of electricity and water.

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella strutted the stage in Sydney last week, announcing plans to fork out $25 billion over the next three years for a series of data centres on the world’s driest continent.

He’ll be jostling for space from local contenders like NextDC, Firmus and AirTrunk.

Many companies are building data centres in Australia.
