Troy Deeney cannot understand why Tottenham Hotspur gave up their chance to sign an England international despite the injury to James Maddison.<\/p>\n

With Maddison<\/a> joining Dejan Kulusevski<\/a> on the treatment table, Thomas Frank<\/a> does not have a natural number ten at his disposal.<\/p>\n

The Dane has been playing Pape Sarr as his most advanced midfielder in the last couple of pre-season matches, and many Spurs fans cannot believe Tottenham have not signed an attacking midfielder yet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was reported that Spurs made contact over Grealish\u2019s availability last week<\/a>, but it does not appear as if the Lilywhites ever made a concrete move for the Manchester City star.<\/p>\n

Gabby Agbonlahor has said Grealish is a \u2018no-brainer\u2019 for Spurs<\/a>, and Deeney agrees with that assessment, insisting that the 29-year-old would have improved Thomas Frank\u2019s starting eleven.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, although Jack Grealish was \u2018very much open\u2019 to joining Tottenham<\/a>, he has now sealed a transfer to Everton on loan instead.<\/p>\n

The former Watford striker questioned why the Lilywhites did not show more intent in signing the City star after Maddison was ruled out for much of the season.<\/p>\n

Deeney told talkSPORT<\/a>: \u201cWith Maddison going down, they have to look at that No.10. I still think it\u2019s a perfect landing spot for Jack Grealish, personally. I think it\u2019s a wonderful landing spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re being told Tottenham have played down their interest in Jack, but you\u2019re talking about someone who has won. Whatever people want to say about Jack, he\u2019s been at City, he\u2019s used to winning, he knows the level, knows the standard, and he\u2019s an upgrade on everything Tottenham have got there. <\/p>\n

\u201cMaddison won\u2019t play this season, and they have missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White. So the fact that they\u2019re playing their interest in Jack Grealish down, to me, is daft.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deeney rates Spurs\u2019 signing of Joao Palhinha<\/p>\n

Thomas Frank has admitted he is delighted to have Joao Palhinha on board<\/a>, but some may point to the fact that the 30-year-old struggled to get game time at Bayern Munich last season.<\/p>\n

Despite his struggles at the Allianz Arena last term, Deeney is convinced that the former Fulham man is not a gamble and that he will improve Tottenham\u2019s midfield.<\/p>\n

The 37-year-old added: \u201cTottenham need to figure out what that midfield looks like, and I don\u2019t think Paulinho is a gamble. When we\u2019ve done Spurs games, I\u2019ve always been worried about their midfield. I don\u2019t know who their holder is, who their enforcer is. I think you know what you\u2019re getting with Paulinho. He\u2019s proper. <\/p>\n

\u201cI get that he hasn\u2019t played as much and he\u2019s not in that vein of form, but I don\u2019t think he\u2019s put any miles on the clock in Germany and he\u2019s not injured. He\u2019s a great player and in my opinion he\u2019s an upgrade on Rodrigo Bentancur.\u201d<\/p>\n
