The Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index inched up to 92.8 in April from 92.2 in March. <\/p>\n
Though the gauge measuring American consumers\u2019 confidence has ticked up the past two months, the reading remains mired near its lowest level since the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
Respondents\u2019 comments about prices, oil, gas and the war increased in April as the national average for a gallon of gas in the U.S. rose to $4.18 this week, up more than a dollar since before the war began. The last time U.S. drivers<\/a> were collectively paying this much at the pump was nearly four years ago, following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \n AP AUDIO: US consumer confidence inches higher in April despite Iran war, soaring gasoline prices\n <\/p>\n AP\u2019s Lisa Dwyer reports consumer confidence inched up.<\/p>\n The largest monthly jump in gas prices in six decades caused a sharp spike in inflation last month, creating major challenges for the inflation-fighters<\/a> at the Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n Consumer prices rose 3.3% in March from a year earlier, the Labor Department reported earlier this month, up sharply from just 2.4% in February and the biggest yearly increase since May 2024. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.9% in March from February, the largest such increase in nearly four years.<\/p>\n It\u2019s the first read on inflation to capture the effects of the Iran war<\/a>. The surge in gas prices will stretch the budgets of lower- and middle-income households as it erodes their incomes, making it harder to afford other necessities such as food and rent.<\/p>\n \u201cConsumers are singing the blues,\u201d said Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union. \u201cThey aren\u2019t happy with high prices for gas, housing, electricity and many other items. It\u2019s clear consumers aren\u2019t going to feel much better until there\u2019s an end to the Middle East conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n Government data from earlier this month showed that the inflation gauge closely monitored by the Federal Reserve moved 2.8% higher in February from a year ago, a sign that prices were persistently elevated<\/a> even before the Iran war caused spikes in oil and gas costs<\/a>.<\/p>\n Those higher prices and the prospect of even higher inflation due to the Iran war makes it unlikely that the Federal Reserve will cut its benchmark interest rate when it wraps up its two-day meeting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n The Fed cut its benchmark interest rate three times to close 2025 in an attempt to support a flagging labor market. However, because lower rates can exacerbate inflation, which remains above the Fed\u2019s 2% target, the Fed has left its overnight lending rate alone at its past two meetings.<\/p>\n In the Conference Board\u2019s report Tuesday, a measure of Americans\u2019 short-term expectations for their income, business conditions and the job market rose 1.2 points to 72.2, but remained well below 80, a marker that can signal a recession ahead.
