<\/p>\nTwo people have died and several others have been injured in a plane crash at Parafield Airport in Adelaide’s north.<\/p>\n
The plane hit a hangar as it was attempting to land about 2:10pm.<\/p>\n
The crash caused a large fire, which has since been extinguished.<\/p>\n
Police said the two people who died were the pilot and passenger of the Diamond DA42 twin-engined aircraft, and that several people on the ground had been injured.<\/p>\n
“Shortly after take-off, [the plane] has tragically crashed into hangar 54 at the airport,” Chief Inspector Andrew McCracken told reporters at the scene.<\/p>\n
“Upon collision, that has obviously [caused] significant injuries and fire and damage.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said one person had suffered life-threatening “serious and significant burns” and had been taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, while two others had been hospitalised with serious injuries.<\/p>\n
Another suffered minor injuries and six people had smoke inhalation.<\/p>\n
All of those injured had been in the hangar at the time of the crash.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“A tragic situation for both the pilot and the passenger, also for the local Parafield community, which is close-knit,” Chief Inspector McCracken said.<\/p>\n
A large number of student pilots were among those evacuated from the scene.<\/p>\n
Chief Inspector McCracken did not say if the two who died were students.<\/p>\n
“A pathologist is on scene along with Major Crash staff \u2014 this [is] subject to a full investigation, and a cordon will remain in place overnight for at least 24 hours as the matter is investigated,” he said.<\/p>\n

Challenge for firefighters<\/p>\n
Thick black smoke from the hangar spread across the nearby area and the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) earlier advised people to stay indoors.<\/p>\n
MFS chief officer Jeff Swann said flames were intensified by the large amount of fuel in the hangar.<\/p>\n
He said the crash damaged the hangar’s fire hydrant and sprinkler system, causing a shortage of water that made the fire a challenge to put out.<\/p>\n
He said three planes in the hangar were also damaged.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Fifty-seven MFS firefighters attended the scene, along with a Country Fire Service crew.<\/p>\n

Premier Peter Malinauskas said he had been briefed by Police Commissioner Grant Stevens on the incident.<\/p>\n
“My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have passed away, and with everyone affected by this devastating event,” the premier posted on social media.<\/p>\n
Parafield Airport’s operator, Adelaide Airport, said in a statement that its “deepest condolences go to the families of the two people who lost their lives”.<\/p>\n
“Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this incident, including those who are undergoing treatment, their loved ones, Parafield Airport staff, Flight Training Adelaide staff and first responders,” it said.<\/p>\n

Investigation underway<\/p>\n
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said investigators would come from interstate.<\/p>\n
“They will arrive on site on Thursday morning, and over coming days will conduct a range of evidence-gathering activities, including site and wreckage examination, and recovery of any aircraft components of interest for further examination at the ATSB’s technical facilities in Canberra,” Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell said in a statement.<\/p>\n
“Investigators will also interview any witnesses and involved parties, and collect relevant recorded information including flight tracking data and CCTV footage, as well as pilot and aircraft maintenance records, and weather information.<\/p>\n
