Australian B-girl Rachael “Raygun” Gunn has lost the university posting she held for almost 20 years, as part of a wave of redundancies.<\/p>\n
The 38-year-old worked at Sydney’s Macquarie University as a lecturer in media and cultural studies up until recently.<\/p>\n
But the breakdancer, who enrolled at 18 to study at the institution, is one of the academics affected by recent job cuts.<\/p>\n
Her staff page on the university’s website has been deleted, while a Macquarie spokesperson said they were unable to comment on an individual employee’s circumstances.<\/p>\n
“We are unable to comment or confirm details on the confidential employment arrangements involving individual staff,” the university said.<\/p>\n
“This is our standard practice for legal and privacy reasons.”<\/p>\n
The viral star boasts a bachelor of arts with honours and a PhD in cultural studies.<\/p>\n
Last year, Macquarie was hit with a warning from SafeWork NSW over its plans to cut more than 60 staff after years of operating in the red.<\/p>\n
Bosses argued the cuts were necessary to ensure the university’s survival.<\/p>\n
Gunn became a household name after her controversial routine at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she failed to win a single one of her round-robin contests.<\/p>\n
She scored zero points across three rounds with her routine featuring questionable moves, including kangaroo jumps, snake-like slithers, and the “sprinkler”.<\/p>\n
Gunn later revealed the global backlash had such a huge impact that she decided not to participate in future competitions.<\/p>\n
However, she maintained she still had her passion for dancing, flagging it was not something she intended to give up.<\/p>\n
“I still break, but I don’t compete. I’m not going to compete anymore. No. No,” she told 2DayFM in November 2024.<\/p>\n
“I was going to keep competing, for sure, but that seems really difficult for me to do now to approach a battle.”<\/p>\n
Gunn said the criticism had been \u201creally upsetting\u201d as she \u201cjust didn’t have any control over how people saw me or who I was\u201d.<\/p>\n
“Dancing is so much fun, and it makes you feel good. I don’t think people should feel crap about the way that they dance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
