A teacher has been charged with producing and possessing child abuse material after a camera was discovered in a bathroom at a primary school in Melbourne’s south-east.<\/p>\n

Victoria Police said the camera was found at a school in Dingley Village on Tuesday, with a Bentleigh man arrested at the school later that day.<\/p>\n

The 33-year-old was charged with multiple offences, including one count each of producing and possess child abuse material.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday night, Kingswood Primary School principal Aaron Cox sent a message to parents informing them teacher Timothy Blamires had been arrested and charged.<\/p>\n

“On Tuesday morning during a routine maintenance check, a video recording device was found,” he said.<\/p>\n

“This was immediately reported to police.<\/p>\n

“I am devastated to be sending you such deeply concerning and distressing news,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Cox said an independent expert security agency conducted a sweep of the school and no other devices were found.<\/p>\n

He said there was no information to suggest any student had been physically harmed.<\/p>\n

Police were called to the school on Tuesday after the device was discovered. (ABC News: Danielle Bonica)<\/p>\n

A Department of Education spokesperson said it was aware of the alleged incident and was reaching out to affected families and staff.<\/p>\n

“We’re working closely with Kingswood Primary School and Victoria Police to respond to this matter, which is deeply distressing for the school community,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“Immediate support is being made available for students and staff impacted by this incident.”<\/p>\n

The teacher appeared before Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, and was remanded in custody.<\/p>\n
