In 2024-25, more than four million people played golf in some format in Australia for the first time ever.

This surge in popularity has seen several local governments across Perth invest in their public courses, including the City of Stirling, which recently completed a $20m upgrade at the Hamersley Public Golf Course.

The City of Canning is currently upgrading the Whaleback driving range, while the City of Fremantle has just started construction on upgrades to the Fremantle Public Golf Course.

The City of South Perth also just broke ground on a $19.8m upgrade to the Collier Park Golf Course driving range.

Since 2022, both the Carramar and Marangaroo golf courses have been managed by Belgravia Leisure on behalf of the City.

Belgravia Leisure business operations manager Douglas Bailey believes the upgrades to the two facilities will help them meet growing demand and broaden their appeal.

“These upgrades will make both venues more welcoming and accessible to a broader cross-section of the community, including younger people, women and those trying the game for the first time,” Mr Bailey said.

“Golf is no longer just about traditional course play.
