The numbers tell their own story heading into Friday\u2019s Madrid Open semi-final: Arthur Fils has not lost a match on clay this season. Neither has Jannik Sinner. Something has to give.<\/p>\n

For the 21-year-old Frenchman, this is more than another shot at a Masters 1000 final \u2013 it\u2019s a measuring stick. After a quarter-final demolition of Jiri Lehecka (6-3, 6-4)<\/a> in which he raced to 3-0 in nine minutes, Fils arrives at the last four full of belief but clear-eyed about the challenge ahead.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t lost a match on clay, and neither has he,\u201d Fils said, as reported by L\u2019Equipe<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s full of confidence, and so am I. I hope it\u2019ll be a real battle. Honestly, I think it\u2019s going to be fun. I know I can swing matches like this, I\u2019m capable of it. It will be a high-intensity match.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crucially, Fils arrives fresher than at his previous Masters 1000 semi-final in Miami last month, where draining wins over Valentin Vacherot and Tommy Paul left him depleted. In Madrid, his path through Nava, Etcheverry and Lehecka has been ruthlessly efficient. \u201cI\u2019ve lost much less energy this week,\u201d he confirmed. \u201cI\u2019m ready to give everything in the final matches of the tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWin or lose, there\u2019ll be plenty to take away\u201d<\/p>\n

He has done his homework, too. Fils watched Sinner\u2019s earlier-round win over Jodar closely<\/a> and came away impressed by what makes the Italian world number one so difficult to break down. \u201cIt could have tipped Jodar\u2019s way several times, but Sinner is very strong mentally, so he held on. I\u2019ll have to be fully switched on from A to Z. I\u2019ll get my chances \u2013 I just have to take them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond the result, Fils sees the match as a genuine barometer of where he stands. \u201cI\u2019ve played very good players on clay since I came back, but not Sinner yet. I\u2019ll see where I\u2019m at and draw my conclusions. Win or lose, there\u2019ll be plenty to take away.\u201d<\/p>\n

The last time Fils faced one of the so-called \u201cBig Two\u201d, things didn\u2019t go to plan. In February\u2019s Doha final, Carlos Alcaraz dismantled him 6-2, 6-1 in 51 minutes \u2013 the sixth-shortest ATP final of the century. Fils won three games and just five points on the Spaniard\u2019s serve, and felt compelled to apologise to the crowd at the trophy ceremony. The week as a whole, only his third tournament back from an eight-month layoff, was a genuine breakthrough, but the final itself underlined the gap that still exists at the very top. Madrid, against an in-form Sinner, is the chance to show that test can go differently<\/p>\n
