As part of the Cinco de Mayo fight week, two Aztec warriors are set to wage an all-out war. In a high-impact collision that promises to grip the Mexican fanbase, reigning world champion José Armando Reséndiz will make the first defense of his WBA super middleweight title against former champion and Tijuana standout Jaime Munguía this Saturday, May 2, at the T-Mobile Arena.

Reséndiz (16-2, 11 KOs) enters the bout at the peak of his career. After shocking the boxing world in May 2025 by dethroning Caleb Plant via split decision in a result that shook the 168-pound division to its core, the Nayarit native was elevated to full champion on January 1. Known for his aggressive style and granite chin, “Toro” understands that a victory over Munguía wouldn’t just validate his reign—it would position him as the next major figure in Mexican boxing.

On the other side, Munguía (45-2, 35 KOs) is aiming to reclaim championship glory, this time at a higher weight. Following a 2025 campaign defined by redemption—avenging his first career loss against Bruno Surace—and overcoming administrative setbacks that kept him sidelined for months, the Tijuana native returns with his sights locked on WBA gold. Munguía, who recently turned down an IBF title opportunity to focus exclusively on Reséndiz, will rely on his high punch output and extensive championship experience to tilt the fight in his favor.

Stylistically, this is a fan-friendly clash. Reséndiz thrives in close quarters and welcomes toe-to-toe exchanges, while Munguía has sharpened his approach under elite guidance, having worked with Erik Morales and now training under Eddie Reynoso, seeking a more refined, intelligent attack without sacrificing his trademark aggression. The key to the fight lies in who can impose their physical terms: whether Reséndiz’s punching power can halt Munguía’s momentum, or if Munguía’s superior experience at the world level will wear the champion down.

[571
64,63,802,85
post-641429","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-boxing","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-boxing","tag-sports
["GET
