A Queensland council has cracked down on a charity for providing skip bins to a homeless camp north of Brisbane.

This afternoon the City of Moreton Bay sent an “education-focused” letter to Nourish Street warning the bins near the Redcliffe Tennis Centre violated council’s by-laws.

The Redcliffe Tennis Centre has been pleading with the council to take action on the tent city, citing rotting rubbish and maggots spilling onto the court.

“The placing of skip bins on public land without an approval constitutes an offence under the Alteration of Public Land Local Law,” the letter read.

The Alteration of Public Land Local Law carries a maximum penalty of $8,345.

Nourish Street founder Beau Haywood said his charity had removed two full skip bins of rubbish in the last five days.

He said the area was now significantly cleaner, now the homeless had access to a bin.

“It just goes to show when you give people the tools, they do the right thing,” Mr Haywood said.

“I can’t help but feel this is to let it fester, get the community offside and to let them push the narrative they want.”

Mr Haywood said there were about 60 homeless people now camping next to the tennis courts.

He said many of them congregated there after being repeatedly evicted from other council land.

Not authorised

A City of Moreton Bay spokesperson said placing skip bins on public land required authorisation.

“Education-focused letters have been sent today to JACS Bins and Nourish Street advising of this local law requirement and explaining how to submit an Alteration of Public Land Application,” the spokesperson said.

“Council has offered assistance, if required, to complete and lodge this application for approval.

“In addition, council has advised that, as Nourish Street is a non-profit organisation, all associated application fees would be waived.”

The council had previously rejected a request by Nourish Street to place skip bins at a homeless camp in Kallangur.

In July last year the council warned “action would be taken” if the charity provided bins and toilets to the Kallangur camp.

In August last year, the City of Moreton Bay told 612 ABC it was inappropriate for the council to provide bins to homeless camps.

“People camping on public land are doing so unlawfully, so it is misguided to suggest council spend ratepayers’ money on bins and toilets to encourage an unlawful activity to continue,” a spokesperson said at the time.

A Queensland council has cracked down on a charity for providing skip bins to a homeless camp north…

[4
64,63,186861,7694,44,310575,310576
post-641499","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-australia","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-city-of-moreton-bay","tag-homelessness","tag-news","tag-nourish-street","tag-redcliffe-tennis-centre
["GET
