New details have emerged about how close Jesse Arthars<\/a> came to signing with R360 before the rebel rugby competition had to postpone. Arthars in without a contract at the Broncos<\/a> past this season, and is believed to be vying with teammate Gehamat Shibasaki for a new deal for 2027.<\/p>\n

But things would be very different had R360 been able to launch next year like they’d initially planned. The Courier Mail reported<\/a> this week that Arthars had a deal worth $US600,000 ($AU837,000) per season on the table to join R360.<\/p>\n

Considering he’s only believed to be on around $375,000 this year at the Broncos, the offer would have been very hard to ignore. The breakaway rugby comp eventually had to postpone<\/a> because of a lack of funding, but Broncos teammate Payne Haas was also very close to joining.<\/p>\n

Former Dragons and Eels star Zac Lomax<\/a> was also on the cusp of making the switch, and has now moved to Super Rugby with the Western Force. Ryan Papenhuyzen and Jye Gray were other players linked to R360 before it fell through.<\/p>\n

As for Arthars, he’s hopeful of gaining a new contract with the Broncos after managing to work his way back into first-grade recently. Arthars started the 2025 season on the wing for Brisbane, but eventually lost his spot and was relegated to reserve-grade.<\/p>\n

He was 18th man in the grand final against the Storm, but never got onto the field. He started this year in reserve-grade as well, but came back into the NRL in Round 5 due to an injury crisis for the Broncos<\/a>. Unfortunately for the 27-year-old he picked up a calf injury in Round 7, and is back out of the starting side because of Reece Walsh’s return from a facial fracture.<\/p>\n

Reports emerged last month that Arthars and Shibasaki might be fighting for one contract for 2027. Shibasaki is only on about $160,000 and will earn a sizeable upgrade on his next deal.<\/p>\n

“I don’t want to lose ‘Gem’ or Jesse,” coach Michael Maguire has stated. “Jesse has been outstanding. Everyone wants to be out on the field but what Jesse does for the team, he is part of a leadership group and he drives values.<\/p>\n

“With Gem, sometimes you have to take a step backward to go forward.
