Tim Tszyu’s blockbuster showdown with Errol Spence Jr is officially locked in – and it’s a huge result for Aussie fight fans.

Former unified welterweight champion Spence will return from a three-year hiatus to take on Tszyu in Australia on July 26 (AEST), with the exact location to be determined.

Multiple outlets, including ESPN and The Ring, report that Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) has confirmed that the deal is done.

Boxing insider Dan Rafael reported on Friday morning that the fight will be formally announced at a press conference in Las Vegas this weekend, ahead of the David Benavidez vs Gilberto Ramirez bout.

It comes after reports in recent weeks that Spence’s hometown of Dallas was the favourite to host the fight should it have been held in the United States.

Venues in Sydney and Brisbane had also been floated, while the Gold Coast’s Cbus Super Stadium — with a capacity of 27,000 — recently entered the mix.

According to Code Sports, No Limit boss Matt Rose and Tim Tszyu are now finalising the contract for the mega fight, which according to US reports will also serve as an eliminator for the WBO or WBA middleweight title.

Jeff Fenech, Tszyu’s new coach, has also confirmed with the publication that the deal is done.

Tszyu was asked following his recent win over Denis Nurja if he was ready to take on one of the best 147-pounders in recent history and he didn’t hesitate.

“I feel like I’m up for it,” he told Ben Damon.

“This guy [Nurja] was tough, no excuses, but me and Errol Spence gonna be one hell of a fight.

“You know how I am, I don’t take a backwards step so if he wants to meet me at the front, bring it on. Catch the big fish, let’s go fishing.”

Spence Jr hasn’t stepped into the ring since his 2023 loss to Terence Crawford, where he was dropped three times and stopped in their undisputed welterweight showdown.

In the aftermath, there were serious doubts about whether the American superstar would ever fight again, with concerns over a string of injuries and two major car accidents outside the ring casting further uncertainty over his future.

Meanwhile, Tszyu has also weathered a bumpy stretch over the past few years after beginning his professional career 24-0.

After falling short in his rematch with Sebastian Fundora last July, Tszyu reset and returned to the winner’s circle with wins over Anthony Velazquez and Nurja.

Last week, Tszyu confirmed he will be taking the Spence fight under a new-look team led by his third coach in six months, Hall of Famer Jeff Fenech.

“This combination, Tszyu and Fenech, it’s not just going to be remembered in boxing history but sporting history,” he said.

“It’s been a long time in the making and I wanted a big Australian synergy, something that has never happened.

“This [fight with Spence] will be one of the greatest victories in Australian boxing history.

“There was a lot happening in that last camp and in all honesty, I wanted to spend more time in Australia. Nobody was doing anything bad but before the fight I had that in mind, that I can’t do any more time away.”
