{"id":642126,"date":"2026-05-01T06:11:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T06:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/642126\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T06:11:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T06:11:18","slug":"archibald-prize-spotlights-unhinged-and-unapologetic-adelaide-filmmakers-inreview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/642126\/","title":{"rendered":"Archibald Prize spotlights &#8216;unhinged and unapologetic&#8217; Adelaide filmmakers &#8211; InReview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">The Art Gallery of New South Wales\u2019 annual portrait prize is back for another year, with a pool of 59 finalists from 1034 entries featuring often-famous faces such as Midnight Oil\u2019s Jim Moginie, champion surfer Layne Beachley, Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns, Governor-General Sam Mostyn, and artist Khaled Sabsabi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">Danny and Michael Philippou, the <a class=\"underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indailysa.com.au\/inreview\/film-tv\/2025\/05\/30\/homegrown-horror-philippou-brothers-feel-the-weight-of-hollywood-success\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pooraka-raised brothers who springboarded to Hollywood success on the back of two Adelaide-filmed horror films,<\/a> Talk to Me and last year\u2019s Bring Her Back, are the subject of Sydney-based artist Drew Bickford\u2019s entry RackaRacka (attack!).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">The 2024 finalist\u2019s unconventional portrait depicts a messy tiled floor scattered with matches, yellow crime scene tape, band-aids, and copies of the American film magazine Fangoria featuring the brothers on the cover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">Bickford says this \u201cpseudo-portrait\u201d pays tribute to the \u201clurid and visceral\u201d canon of horror films that inspire both Bickford and the \u201cunhinged and unapologetic\u201d work of the twins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">\u201cI love that their world feels like a rollercoaster of \u2018safe danger\u2019 \u2013 a chaotic but tightly controlled experience, just like horror movies,\u201d Bickford explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">The pair, who rose to prominence on the back of home-made prank and special effects videos posted to their \u2018RackaRacka\u2019 YouTube channel, became Hollywood success stories after their low budget horror feature Talk to Me earned $140 million internationally and saw the pair backed by taste-making studio A24.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">\u201cThe composition references the kind of reckless carnage the boys leave in their wake; a contaminated crime scene and a dangerous physical presence that might suggest playing with fire and running with scissors. Hopefully, the work paints the twins as hell-for-leather storytellers whose combustible practice sits somewhere between destruction and entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307568\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SID119395.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1190\"  \/>Archibald Prize 2026 finalist Tsering Hannaford\u2019s Portrait of Loribelle Spirovski (after D\u00fcrer). Photo: Jenni Carter \/ Art Gallery of New South Wales<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">Returning to the Archibald shortlist for the 12th time is Adelaide-based artist Tsering Hannaford, who has followed her <a class=\"underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indailysa.com.au\/inreview\/visual-art\/2025\/05\/09\/you-dont-take-anything-for-granted-tsering-hannafords-left-hand-turn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">poignant 2025 self-portrait <\/a>with another piece reflecting on the impact of physical injury on art-making \u2013 this time through a portrait of fellow finalist Loribelle Spirovski.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">\u201cFive years ago, Loribelle sustained an injury which saw her navigate years of chronic pain, making painting extremely difficult,\u201d Hannaford explains. \u201cIn 2025, Loribelle adapted her method of painting to use her fingers, and her portrait of William Barton won the Archibald People\u2019s Choice in both Sydney and Geelong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">Spirovski also appears in this year\u2019s shortlist with a finger-painting of songwriter Daniel Johns, who she met during the making of Scott Hicks\u2019 2023 documentary The musical mind: a portrait in progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">Indulkana-based artists Vincent Namatjira and Kaylene Whiskey also feature, with Namatjira \u2013 who won the prize in 2020 for his portrait of former Sydney Swan Adam Goodes \u2013 delivering a playful tribute to his love of ten-pin bowling. Whiskey\u2019s piece, Dancing with The Huxleys, portrays the Yankunytjatjara artist alongside Melbourne arts duo The Huxleys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">Celebrated Pitjantjatjara artist Iluwanti Ken also appears via a portrait by Richard Lewer, who travelled to Tjala Arts in Amata to create the work. \u201cAlthough we have known one another for several years through shared exhibitions, being on Country together deepened my understanding of her presence and the responsibilities she carries,\u201d Lewer says.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SID119358.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1028\"  \/>Richard Lewer\u2019s\u00a0Iluwanti Ken captures his fellow artist at home on Country in the APY Lands. Photo: Jenni Carter \/ Art Gallery of New South Wales<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">Other noteworthy subjects include Ahmed Al Ahmed, who drew international praise after stepping in to disarm one of the attackers during the December 2025 Bondi terror attack. Al Ahmed was hospitalised after receiving multiple gunshot wounds in the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">\u201cI chose to depict his victorious pose at the SCG stadium, where he was cheered by the crowd shortly after leaving hospital \u2013 a moment that signifies bravery and peace,\u201d first-time Archibald finalist Julia Dover says of the oil painting, titled simply, My Friend. \u201cI gave him an evil eye to hold in his fist, to celebrate his triumph over evil. He stands against a contrasting background of soft buttery pink to reflect the ambience of his soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SID119371.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1225\"  \/>My Friend, Julia Dover\u2019s portrait of Ahmed al Ahmed. Photo: Jenni Carter \/ Art Gallery of New South Wales<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg group-[.is-premiumproperty]:font-sans\">Melbourne-based artist Chris Watts has also contributed a colourful profile of retired West Coast Eagle Mitch Brown, who last year made history as the first male AFL player to publicly come out as bisexual.
