A senior producer on the film, The Deb, said lead star Charlotte MacInnes did “some fudging” when the young actor allegedly walked back concerns about the behaviour of another producer, a defamation trial has heard.<\/p>\n

Ms MacInnes is suing actor and director Rebel Wilson, claiming she defamed her in posts on social media by allegedly stating MacInnes lied about an incident involving producer Amanda Ghost at a Bondi apartment.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit relates to events in 2023 during the production of Ms Wilson’s directorial debut film, The Deb, which opened in Australia earlier this month after lengthy delays and legal battles.<\/p>\n

Australian producer Greer Simpkin gave evidence at the high-profile trial on Friday when she was questioned about an email in which she stated Ms MacInnes was “walking back” a complaint against Ms Ghost.<\/p>\n

“Charlotte is walking back the statement she made to Rebel,” Ms Simpkin wrote to Ms Ghost on September 18, 2023.<\/p>\n

“I feel there is some fudging being done by Charlotte.<\/p>\n

“I wonder though, under the circumstances, if you are happy to draw a line under it since she is no longer saying that she was uncomfortable?”<\/p>\n

‘Bath incident’ revisited<\/p>\n

Ms Simpkin told the court she had learned of the “bath incident” between Ms MacInnes and Ms Ghost in early September 2023, just prior to the start of filming.<\/p>\n

The producer told the court she received a text from Ms Wilson shortly after sending the email, in which Ms Wilson stated:<\/p>\n

“I 100 per cent did not misunderstand what Charlotte said to me and repeated it accurately to Amanda.”<\/p>\n

The text and emails relate to an incident in early September in which Ms Ghost suffered an allergic reaction from the cold while swimming at Bondi Beach with Ms MacInnes.<\/p>\n

The court previously heard Ms MacInnes helped the producer back to the Bondi apartment they were sharing and ran a hot bath to warm her up, climbing into it with her.<\/p>\n

Ms Simpkin told the court she was told of the incident by Ms Ghost and subsequently received a phone call from Ms Wilson where the event was described as “this bath incident”.<\/p>\n

“I can’t remember the exact words but it was along the lines of this thing happened, ‘this bath incident happened’,” Ms Simpkin said.<\/p>\n

At dinner some days later, Ms Ghost told Ms Simpkin that “Rebel had told her that Charlotte had said she was uncomfortable in the bath incident”.<\/p>\n

“Ms Ghost was surprised by that and kind of shocked,” Ms Simpkin said, adding that the pair agreed Ms MacInnes should be moved out of the Bondi apartment and into different accommodation.<\/p>\n

NDA concerns raised<\/p>\n

Ms Simpkin said she contacted Ms MacInnes’s agent Monica Keightley to discuss the incident and make sure the actor was OK.<\/p>\n

In a follow-up meeting with Ms Keightley, Ms Simpkin said she also raised concerns from Ms Wilson that Ms MacInnes had breached her Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) following a text from Ms Wilson, which stated:<\/p>\n

“Greer please make sure to emphasize [sic] that Charlotte has breached her NDA on multiple occasions, and I am personally very upset by that.”<\/p>\n

In another email from Ms Keightley to Ms Simpkin, the agent states she has spoken to Ms MacInnes, who did not feel “any discomfort whatsoever” over the incident, stating in a text:<\/p>\n

“Charlotte has categorically stated that she was never uncomfortable with Amanda and Charlotte is hoping to chat to Amanda about it asap.”<\/p>\n

The high-profile defamation trial has sat for nine days, with Ms Wilson defending herself in the stand for the past three days.<\/p>\n
