(Evan Agostini\/Invision\/AP)<\/p>\n<p>The curatorial department is dedicated to collecting, conserving and studying over 33,000 fashion objects and accessories \u2013 which all collectively represent seven centuries of fashion history\ufeff.<\/p>\n<p>Year on year, the event raises 10s of millions of dollars towards maintaining the department in question.\ufeff<\/p>\n<p>What is this year&#8217;s theme?\ufeff<\/p>\n<p>The Met Gala&#8217;s theme and official dress code go hand-in-hand every year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Costume art&#8221; encapsulates this year&#8217;s iteration, while the &#8220;Fashion Is Art,&#8221; dress code encourages guests to interpret clothing as creativity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/ad5f854d-ea61-4e09-9b93-57aff6f7eb7d.jpeg\"  alt=\" Charlotte Casiraghi, Kristen Stewart, Sofia Coppola, and Marion Cotillard \"\/>The theme this year is &#8220;Costume Art,&#8221; and is expected to transcend fashion and fine art. (Mike Coppola\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>As revealed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Instagram in November, the theme \ufeffwill focus on &#8220;on Western art from prehistory to the present.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[It] will consider depictions of the dressed body from across the Met&#8217;s curatorial departments, pairing garments with art objects spanning some 5,000 years,&#8221; Vogue revealed.<\/p>\n<p>If A-list attendees meet the brief, we can expect to see \ufefflooks that blur the lines between wearable garments and fine art; focusing on dramatic silhouettes, anatomical designs and artistic textures.<\/p>\n<p>The theme, as per, is fitting; set to inaugurate the Met Costume Institute&#8217;s new, nearly 12,000-square-foot home Cond\u00e9 M. (Getty Images for The Met Museum\/)<\/p>\n<p>And much like the event&#8217;s guest list, Wintour is also right across the seating plan, implementing a strict no-couples seating policy.<\/p>\n<p>\ufeffThat&#8217;s right; not only are guests unable to request a plus one for their significant other unless pre-approved by Wintour, couples generally aren&#8217;t allowed to sit next to each other.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016 Met Gala documentary First Monday in May, former director of special projects at Vogue Sylvana Ward Durrett revealed it was a cardinal rule: &#8220;Never seat spouses next to each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The whole point of these things is to meet new people and to be interested in what others are doing. What&#8217;s the point if you come here to hang out with your husband?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Once through the doors, mingling and art-viewing commences, followed by a highly secretive performance kept under-wraps until the moment they take the stage.\ufeff<\/p>\n<p>What items (or behaviours) are banned?<\/p>\n<p>All the usual suspects are not permitted within the highly secretive event.<\/p>\n<p>Phones and selfies are a huge no-no \u2013 though often celebrities are seen in flagrant disregard for this rule through the so-called &#8216;bathroom loophole.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the Met toilets have become a tolerated VIP area, where rules are bent due to the private nature of the space.<\/p>\n<p>Far from the prying eyes of event organisers and official photographers alike, celebs often retreat to the toilets for extended periods.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/29592d07-3bc5-4d52-9a8f-953c35247e78.png\"  alt=\"Questlove selfie at the Met Gala\"\/>Celebs often flout the no-phone rule, retreating to the bathrooms to document their night. (Instagram\/questlove)<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly \u2013 and reportedly owing to an aversion to bad breath \u2013 food is often devoid of ingredients such as onion, garlic and \ufeffparsley.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/04\/02\/a-fascinating-peek-inside-anna-wintours-secretive-met-ball-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"New York Post\">New York Post<\/a>, onion, garlic and parsley are prohibited to avoid issues with bad breath.<\/p>\n<p>Bruschetta is also off the menu on the off-chance \u2013 God forbid \u2013 that it spills onto a guest&#8217;s outfit.<\/p>\n<p>Which celebrities have been blacklisted?<\/p>\n<p>\ufeffThere are but two celebrities who are confirmed as persona non grata at the glitzy event; US President Donald Trump, and Project Runway host Tim Gunn.<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump remains the only celebrity that <a href=\"https:\/\/celebrity.nine.com.au\/latest\/met-gala-2026-celebrities-not-attending-skipping-banned-boycott\/2c63b8b5-7fd9-4097-b685-9969d568cf96\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"Anna Wintour has personally admitted to blacklisting\">Anna Wintour has personally admitted to blacklisting<\/a>, doing so during a 2017 appearance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gWQ3mhN_6iE&amp;t=338s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Late Late Show with James Corden<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When asked which celebrity she&#8217;d never allow back to the Met Gala, her response was swift and decisive: &#8220;Donald Trump.\ufeff&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/03351d57-b7db-4f66-aef4-b81e3449a3c0.jpeg\"  alt=\"Donald Trump attends the Costume Institute Gala Benefit to celebrate the opening of the &quot;American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity&quot; exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 3, 2010 in New York City.\"\/>Donald Trump remains the only celebrity that Anna Wintour has admitted to have banned. (FilmMagic)<\/p>\n<p>Having previously been a regular attendee throughout the 2000&#8217;s alongside Melania Trump, his last appearance came in 2012, years before his presidential campaign first kicked off.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Gunn, meanwhile, confirmed his own ban to E!
