TUCSON, Ariz. –\u00a0The Arizona men’s tennis team opened NCAA Tournament play in dominant fashion on Friday afternoon, sweeping Northern Arizona, 4-0, at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.<\/p>\n
With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 22-4 on the season and move on to face the Clemson Tigers\u00a0on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Tucson with a spot in the NCAA Sweet-16 on the line.<\/p>\n
Arizona wasted little time taking control of the match, earning the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Filip Gustafsson<\/a> and Oskar Jansson<\/a> opened doubles play with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles before Jay Friend<\/a> and Alexander Rozin<\/a> matched the score on court one to clinch the point for the Wildcats.<\/p>\n The Wildcats carried that momentum into singles competition, where they claimed three straight-set victories to seal the match.<\/p>\n Alejandro Arcila<\/a> was first off the court, delivering a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to extend Arizona’s lead to 2-0. Jay Friend<\/a> followed with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 victory on court one, putting the Wildcats one point away from advancing.<\/p>\n Filip Gustafsson<\/a> clinched the match for Arizona at No. 3 singles, defeating Jakub Volesky 6-2, 6-4 to send the Wildcats into the second round of the NCAA Tournament.<\/p>\n Arizona also held commanding leads in the unfinished matches, including Alexander Rozin<\/a> leading 6-1, 5-2 at No. 2 singles and Matthias Uwe Kask<\/a> ahead 6-3, 5-1 on court six when play was halted.<\/p>\n The Wildcats will return to LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon as they host Clemson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
