The No. 12 Georgia men\u2019s tennis team defeated Elon 4-0 Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex to advance to the second round of the NCAA Men\u2019s Tennis Championship regionals.<\/p>\n
Georgia came out strong in doubles play as Noah Johnston and Derrick Chen quickly took control on court three. The Bulldogs tandem secured an early break and never looked back, defeating Oskar Antinheimo and Nick Fisk 6-2 to give Georgia an early advantage.<\/p>\n
Will Jansen and Gabriele Vulpitta battled through long rallies in a tightly contested match against Jack Curtis and Rafael Ymer on court two. A service break gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead and shifted momentum in Georgia\u2019s favor. The pair capitalized on the opportunity and secured the doubles point with strong serving from Jansen in the final game, winning 6-3.<\/p>\n
The No. 3-ranked doubles tandem of Arda Azkara and Santiago Giamichelle rallied after falling behind 3-0 on court one, cutting the deficit to 5-4 before the match went unfinished in Elon\u2019s favor.<\/p>\n
Georgia carried its momentum into singles play, taking the first set on all six courts.<\/p>\n
Johnston extended Georgia\u2019s lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Nikola Parichkov. The win added to what has been a standout freshman campaign for Johnston, who leads the Bulldogs with 16 singles victories this season. He was recently named to the SEC All-Freshman team.<\/p>\n
Chen followed shortly after. The senior fell behind 3-0 in the opening set before winning six consecutive games to take control of the match. Chen closed out the victory in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to put Georgia one point away from advancing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On Court 2, tensions rose after several disputed line calls drew visible frustration from Jansen and the Georgia faithful. One call led to a brief exchange as Elon head coach Maciek\u00a0Sykut came face-to-face with Georgia associate head coach Bryce Warren.<\/p>\n
Despite the interruptions, SEC Newcomer of the Year Jansen remained in control. Multiple service breaks helped him claim the opening set before he cruised through the second 7-5, 6-0. No. 36 Jansen clinched the match for Georgia after Ymer double-faulted on match point, sending the Bulldogs into the second round.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Jansen has a record of 14-4 in singles matches with eight ranked wins. He continued the momentum from the end of the season, where he won eight of his last nine completed matches.<\/p>\n
The second-team All-SEC selection, Azkara, also put himself in a position to finish the match, leading 5-2 in the second set after taking the opening set in a tiebreak. Giamichelle stayed strong in the second set as well after winning a first-set tiebreak.<\/p>\n
Elon earned its NCAA tournament berth after winning the Coastal Athletic Association championship for the first time since 2019. The Phoenix entered Friday\u2019s matchup with an 8-12 record, while Georgia improved to 19-8 on the season.<\/p>\n
The Bulldogs have 42 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, marking the longest streak in the NCAA. Georgia faces No. 30 NC State at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Wolfpack defeated No. 48 Middle Tennessee State 4-2 Friday to advance.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The teams most recently met in May 2025, where the Wolfpack won 4-1. The Bulldogs lead the series record 3-2 and 2-0 at home. NC State is 17-7 on the season with eight ranked wins.<\/p>\n
