Stay Out the Way Safe Saturdays was organized by New B.O.Y. and saw children of all ages gather for a basketball tournament in Lawrence on Saturday.<\/p>\n

LAWRENCE, Ind. \u2014 A Lawrence church<\/a> hosted a lot more than just a basketball tournament on Saturday.<\/p>\n

With “playing for peace” written on the jerseys, it created a safe place for youth to come together and stay out of any potential trouble they could get into on a Saturday night.<\/p>\n

Stay Out the Way Safe Saturdays was organized by New B.O.Y. and saw children of all ages gather from Indiana, Illinois and Michigan for the event at New Revelations Christian Church in Lawrence.<\/p>\n

“You’re getting fed, being around a lot of friends, a lot of community leaders, a lot of information and knowledge that you can soak up even in this fun environment,” New B.O.Y. member Cameron Washington said.<\/p>\n

Parents also joined their children for the event. Branden Yates came to New B.O.Y. after a referral from his probation officer. Now, he gets to tell his story to others who came to the event.<\/p>\n

“A lot of people feel like they be stuck, once they stuck in life, there’s no going back or no going up, like they just got to stay where they at, and I feel like you don’t have to,” Yates said. “You can change, you can do better.”<\/p>\n

Children also came from Illiana Youth Federation Ministry. Rijenna Murray, the ministry’s president, said it is important to be proactive instead of reactive to keep youth safe.<\/p>\n

“We show our young people what it’s all about when it comes to love, support, respect for one another, as well as an opportunity to just to get out and be with others,” Murray said.<\/p>\n
