McLaren sends huge statement in stunning 1-2 as F1 title race takes big twist<\/a><\/p>\nNorris was fuming that he didn\u2019t win the race, saying over team radio: \u201cHow did we not win this? We should have won guys.\u201d<\/p>\n
Norris later described the result as \u201ca mixed bag.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cWe just got undercut. We should have boxed first, but Kimi did a good job and hats off to him and Mercedes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cA good race. He didn\u2019t make any mistakes and I\u2019m gutted not to win, but I didn\u2019t have the pace.\u201d <\/p>\n
The weather was significantly cooler than for Saturday\u2019s sprint, but without the forecast rain that had brought forward the start by three hours.<\/p>\n

Antonelli made a clean start from his third consecutive pole, but was passed on the inside by Leclerc as Verstappen hit a curb and spun, creating chaos.<\/p>\n
Leclerc resisted Antonelli with Norris third until lap five when the teenager passed him, only for Leclerc to regain the lead.<\/p>\n
\u201cBe patient, Lando, stay with them and let them yo-yo,\u201d said Will Joseph, Norris\u2019s race engineer, before the luckless Isack Hadjar — who had started from the pit lane — crashed on lap six.<\/p>\n
Almost immediately, Gasly also lost control, half-rolled and hit the wall after a collision with Lawson, and a safety car was deployed.<\/p>\n
Verstappen, who had fallen back, clashed with Liam Lawson and Carlos Sainz, before pitting on lap nine for hards, returning in 16th. Lawson retired his damaged car, joining Nico Hulkenberg, Gasly and Hadjar in the pits.<\/p>\n
Racing resumed on lap 12 with Leclerc resisting Norris until the champion powered by to become the third different leader as light rain arrived.<\/p>\n
Driving with fury, Verstappen, who had crossed a pit lane exit line and faced a post-race investigation, climbed back to sixth by lap 21 when Russell pitted for hards.<\/p>\n
Norris then led Antonelli by 3.2 seconds in the duel to define the race. <\/p>\n
Leclerc pitted for hards and retuned 10th, behind Russell.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy did we stop then?\u201d asked a frustrated Leclerc. \u201cWhen is the rain? Next time you make a decision, please speak to me..\u201d <\/p>\n

Antonelli then pitted, together with Norris and Hamilton, the champion losing the initiative to the young Italian as Piastri enjoyed a brief spell as leader before pitting.<\/p>\n
This left the precocious Silver Arrows boy in front, with his team calming his nerves as McLaren\u2019s defending champion stalked him.<\/p>\n
The pair were separated by less than a second after 40 laps. <\/p>\n
After the frantic yo-yo passing of the early stages, the field stretched out when Leclerc passed Verstappen, on his long-worn tires, before his late spin gifted Piastri third place.<\/p>\n
\u2018IN THE BIN\u2019 <\/p>\n
Several incidents were still under investigation by stewards hours after the chequered flag.<\/p>\n
Three involved Leclerc; the first for him and George Russell making contact on the final lap, the second for leaving the track on the final lap multiple times and gaining an advantage, and the third for driving his car in an \u201cunsafe condition\u201d after he hit the wall. <\/p>\n
\u201cI pushed very hard. In the second to last lap, I thought it was a good idea to kind of let Oscar [Piastri] go. For me to get the overtake, I knew it was going to be very difficult to stay in front otherwise and it was a very poor decision,\u201d Leclerc said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the space of four corners I put a very strong race in the bin, so I\u2019m very frustrated about that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stewards ultimately deemed that Leclerc was guilty of leaving the track multiple times and gaining an advantage and gave him a 20-second time penalty, which demoted him to eighth.<\/p>\n
Verstappen was also under investigation for crossing the white line on pit exit and also for minor contact with Russell late in the race. <\/p>\n
