Matildas captain Sam Kerr has become Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer in England’s Women’s Super League (WSL).

Kerr’s 64th WSL goal ignited second-placed Chelsea’s 3-1 win at Leicester.

The result ensured the Blues will play in the Champions League again next season, as they are guaranteed a top-three finish on the WSL standings.

Kerr spoke with emotion about her 13th-minute header that took her past former teammate Fran Kirby’s Chelsea record in the WSL.

“There have been some pretty special goals in my career, but I don’t know if it gets more special than this,” Kerr said.

Kerr is finishing the season strongly after returning from a long-standing absence through the ACL injury.

Her future at Chelsea after this season is clouded amid rumours she is on the way to play in the United States with National Women’s Soccer League club Denver Summit.

Meanwhile, Manchester City moved to the brink of its first WSL title in a decade after Rebecca Knaak struck in stoppage time against Liverpool.

Matildas star Mary Fowler featured off the bench in City’s 1-0 win at home.

A victory on the final day at West Ham will give City the WSL title, even if third-placed Arsenal wins its three matches in hand.

City has 52 points in the standings, with Chelsea (46) and Arsenal (41) making up the top three.
