(ABC News: Michael Atkin)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Further north of Roebourne, at Pandanus Park Community, diesel is $4 a litre and chairperson Patricia Riley said people were also being forced to miss funerals and other significant events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It affected us a lot, especially as a remote mob, because a lot of us still practice our culture,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t have the dollars to fill our car up with a full tank to go to another community and then come back.&#8221;Food prices higher<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the Western Desert community of Kunawarritji, the cost of a recent food delivery truck, which had to drive 17 hours, cost an additional $5,000 due to fuel price rises.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The outside of a store in a remote community.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/4d82c4d2354cd378a278ca381d32dadf.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Fewer tourists are passing through the Kunawarritji community and buying from the store. (Supplied: Jarni Blakkarly)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the reduction of tourists along the popular Canning Stock Route, which spans 2,000 kilometres in northern WA, has meant less people are buying from the community&#8217;s store.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The fuel price has gone up, so the store has to recover the costs from the transport, so it&#8217;s a bit of an issue there,&#8221; Kunawarritji CEO Chris Flood said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Tourism is a major part of Kunuaraitji and you only have it a few months of the year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jobs on the line<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Fuel is also impacting the future employment of Martu people in Kunawarritji and other remote East Pilbara communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Non-for-profit organisation Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ) general manager Tim Schneider said 500 Martu people were employed through the ranger program, but fuel prices were threatening its viability.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wearing a blue t-shirt and a hat leans on the car.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/9d5aab8e63abc32480f07bcb9070a2dc.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tim Schneider says ranger programs offer essential incomes for Martu people.
