Love and Other Catastrophes star Radha Mitchell was wearing a wedding dress on the set of her latest film, action flick Seven Snipers, when she felt some unwanted attention.<\/p>\n

“It’s a flashback sequence with Tim Roth as the bad guy, the Dragon, and we’re in the middle of an emotional duel,” she recalls. “Then I feel something creeping under my dress \u2026 It’s a spider. I have a phobia and I’m screaming.”<\/p>\n

It’s a hazard of the job when shooting on location in Queensland.<\/p>\n

What: A frenetic Australian action film<\/p>\n

Directed by Sandra Sciberras, Seven Snipers is the first feature from Monster Pictures and was filmed on a farm just outside of Ipswich, south-west of Brisbane.<\/p>\n

Mitchell, who began her career on Neighbours, plays Kris aka Voodoo Child, a former elite sniper who has concealed her troubled past from her rebellious teen daughter, Anja (Annabel Wolfe).\u00a0<\/p>\n

When Roth’s Dragon shows up at their remote home bearing a bloodthirsty grudge, Kris is forced to summon support from fellow sharpshooters, led by Damien Ryan’s White Dog.<\/p>\n

Mayhem ensues as Kris and her trigger-happy crew, including Bad Boys: Ride or Die actor Ioan Gruffudd and Sleeping Dogs’ Pacharo Mzembe, make their stand.<\/p>\n

“Kris is supposed to be a renowned sniper with a serious reputation, and we didn’t have months of preparation,” Mitchell says.<\/p>\n

The star met with a real ex-sniper to help her get the psychology.<\/p>\n

“He pulled out these huge guns that I couldn’t lift. Oh my God. I got nervous, thinking, ‘How am I going to do this?'” Mitchell says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“But then I was the only person on the day who was able to shoot the target at 1,000 metres, three times in a row.”<\/p>\n

It’s been more than 25 years since Mitchell made her first action film, sci-fi horror Pitch Black with Vin Diesel.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“There was a lot of testosterone on that set, and it was difficult to deal with at 20-something,” she says.<\/p>\n

Seven Snipers was way less stressful.<\/p>\n

“Sandra is so enthusiastic,” Mitchell says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“She loved us, and the film was really fun because you’re physically involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s visceral, very embodied, a bit like dancing. You’ve got to be in your body with it.”<\/p>\n

Roth’s a good sport, compared to the Dragon, Mitchell says. “He’s so free and light-hearted.”<\/p>\n

Australian humour<\/p>\n

Roth will never forget Mitchell’s reaction to that spider.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Her scream was astounding,” he says.<\/p>\n

While not as perturbed by our exotic fauna, he still had concerns while shimmying through long grass in a camouflaged ghillie suit in the baking heat.<\/p>\n

“A lot of lovely animals roaming around,” he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“They had to keep combing through it before we arrived to get rid of the snakes and spiders.”<\/p>\n

While Seven Snipers marked Roth’s first visit to Brisbane, he’s no stranger to Australia, having shot Simon Target’s 1992 thriller Backsliding with Young Einstein actor Odile Le Clezio in South Australia within a year of his breakthrough in Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs.<\/p>\n

“It was the beginning of me never going home,” he says with a chuckle.<\/p>\n

Nominated for an Oscar for his turn as Cunningham opposite Liam Neeson in Rob Roy, Roth has enjoyed an astonishing globe-hopping career, working with the likes of David Lynch, Robert Altman, Peter Greenaway and Francis Ford Coppola.<\/p>\n

He’s appeared on the Sydney-set crime show Last King of the Cross, in the biopic Grace of Monaco with Nicole Kidman, and with Naomi Watts in Michael Haneke’s Funny Games remake.<\/p>\n

“Naomi is one of the funniest people I’ve ever worked with, as is Nicole,” Roth says. “I love their friendship and that sense of humour I was not ready for. Naomi would mess me up when we did Funny Games, making you laugh on camera at the most inappropriate times. She’s one of my heroes.”<\/p>\n

Roth’s had a lot of on-the-job training with firearms across the years and knows his way around a firearm. He even keeps a gun at home, gifted by his The Hateful Eight co-star, Samuel L Jackson.<\/p>\n

“He gave us all revolvers as a present,” Roth says. “It’s framed on the wall.”<\/p>\n

Sciberras’s attitude convinced him to sign up for Seven Snipers.<\/p>\n

“Sandra’s quite wild and very fun to be around, living up to every expectation,” Roth says. “She created an incredible atmosphere on set.”<\/p>\n

Heads and tongues<\/p>\n

With a screenplay by Andrew O’Keefe, Seven Snipers channels the spirit of some of Sciberras’s favourite ensemble-driven films, including Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, and James Cameron’s Aliens.<\/p>\n

“We embraced character,” Sciberras says. “I want to be at the edge of my seat when they’re in the ultimate of peril.”<\/p>\n

Sciberras was excited to work with Mitchell and Roth. “I’m a 90s kid and really love the work they both brought to the screen,” she says. “Big bloody fan.”<\/p>\n

Seven Snipers features several big, bloody moments requiring gruesome practical effects, including Mitchell groping around in an open head wound.<\/p>\n

“The fabulous make-up artist and Penny Lane Is Dead director Mia’kate Russell created that head,” Sciberras says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We’ve known each other since we were 19. I forgot how impactful that scene was until we watched it with an audience.”<\/p>\n

While it’s a tense film, Seven Snipers channels a uniquely twisted Australian sense of humour Sciberras says Roth has mastered.<\/p>\n

“It’s a little bit tongue in cheek, and Tim has got that smile.”<\/p>\n
