Chris Guider \u201929, an Elon University economics and business analytics double major, was recently featured in a Burlington\u00a0Times-News article<\/a> examining how data analysis can challenge assumptions about decision-making in the National Football League.<\/p>\n

The story highlights Guider\u2019s research<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0the effectiveness of new NFL kickoff rules introduced in 2024. The changes, designed to improve player safety, created multiple \u201ctouchback\u201d scenarios, situations where the ball is placed at different yard lines depending on how a kickoff ends.<\/p>\n

\u201cA big misconception is that moving touchbacks farther up automatically leads to higher scoring,\u201d Guider told the Times News. \u201cWhat surprised people is that starting field position didn\u2019t have a statistically significant impact on whether a team scored or how long a drive lasted.\u201d<\/p>\n
